07  _{I require all multi-spaced content to be tagged. I have trash-tier eyesight from a focusing issue (thanks genetics) that's made my nearsightedness awful. This often results in severe eye strain, chronic headaches, chronic neck and shoulder stiffness, and dry eyes.Content with more than one space between each and every word severely exacerbates this. This includes, but is not limited to memes, aesthetic posts, promos, or posts from your other writing partners. Tag filtering on my blog uses 'trigger tw' for photo content, and 'trigger cw' for written content. I will not use any other filtering. If I need something filtered, I will use 'trigger tw', 'trigger cw', 'cw trigger', or 'tw trigger' to filter it. I stick to a basic, easy tagging system without filters or censoring in the trigger to ensure that it's caught by filters, and I ask the same of mutuals.}

11  _{In terms of formatting, I use basic bold/italics for varying emphasis, small text, medium-sized centered icons, and headers/banners for posts. There is zero expectation for my mutuals to use graphics or icons in replies. My graphics and icons are for me, and I do not expect you to use them. Writing >>>> aesthetics to me.Excessively busy formatting in replies is incredibly difficult for me to follow. I find it deeply distracting because of my ADHD and struggle to focus on the writing. If you want to ship, you're welcome to inquire & we can plot; however, the chemistry has to be there for both the muses as well as our writing for me to consider it 'official' in any capacity.This blog is multi-ship and does not, and never will, practice exclusivity. The exception is private muses, which may have some exclusivity. Otherwise, all ships exist in their own universe, independent from other ships I have with that muse.My only hard-line no is poly-ships / polyamory content. I am not comfortable writing it for personal reasons (due to a specific personal experience). 16  _{Duplicates & DNIs: I have a few fandoms that I will not interact with, primarily for personal reasons, or fandoms that I practice extreme selectivity with. Because I curate my own space, I don't feel the need to list them, as my reasons for not engaging with them are personal & not necessarily reflective of writers & I may make exceptions for specific blogs.In terms of DNIs and callouts: I will never, under any circumstances, reblog 99% of callouts. The very rare instance I may reblog one is if it is a minor attempting to coerce/force adult writers into writing with them (especially smut) if there are clear-cut screenshots and information depicting so. Katrina was born on the colony of Mindoir in the Attican Traverse, with one older brother by the name of Marcus. At the age of sixteen, she was caught in a slaver attack, watching as her best friend (and best friend's family), her parents, and her brother were killed.After the attack, she came under the care of David Anderson, one of the soldiers who rescued her off the colony, and became his legal foster child for two years until she could enlist at eighteen. During that time, she was trained to hone her biotics by Iryna Corlizea, an asari matriarch who came at the behest of Anderson and his colleague, Kahlee Sanders. During that time, she was reunited with her brother, and although they went their separate ways, their relationship remained visibly distant, but subtly close despite their differing lifestyles.

service history: sole survivor

Katrina enlisted in the Alliance Military, becoming well-known for her powerful defensive biotic capabilities. During that time she was sent to investigate the disappearance of early pioneers of the Akuze colony. During the mission, the platoon of fifty marines she was in charge of came under attack, beset by thresher maws in the middle of the night. Katrina was the only soldier to make it to the landing zone alive, though she was in critical condition. Her injuries required nearly a year of recovery between surgeries, grafts, and physical therapy, leaving her heavily scarred in the process. From there, she was invited to the Interplanetary Combatives Training (ICT) Academy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she passed and received her N7 designation with flying colours. She was officially classified as an N7 Bastion Adept.

canon divergence

Katrina's portrayal includes a handful of small canon divergences that I employ in my writing. Firstly, I am open to the concept of other Shepard portrayals (with Colonist backgrounds) as siblings to Katrina (older or younger, we can discuss), or sibling-like dynamics with other Shepard portrayals.The second is that Both Kaidan and Ashley survive the Virmire assault in Mass Effect 1. I've always been saddened by the decision between the two of them, and given Kat's upbringing coupled with the events of Akuze, it is likely that she would push to attempt this. In this regard, Ashley was sent to aid the salarian STG troops, while Kaidan was responsible for arming the bomb. Check my headcanons post for more details on that particular event.Thirdly, in terms of ending, Katrina's canon follows Audemus' Happy Ending Mod, which is most effectively summed up as a modified Destroy ending. To sum it up, the Starchild AI does not exist, the Reapers are destroyed, and the geth and EDI survive, along with Katrina, who at the end places Anderson's name on the Normandy's memorial wall. However, the nightmares of the child still exist in her canon, as there are psychological reasons she experiences those nightmares explained in headcanons.

squadmate romances

By initial default, Katrina does not romance anyone in Mass Effect 1. This can be discussed in specific plots, but in general she will not pursue a romance. I do not have a specific "canon" romance for Katrina, though I have biases for Kaidan, Liara, Garrus, and Miranda as romance options. I'm open to any others, with the exception of Ashley as, in simple terms, Ashley is my blorbo for Mass Effect and I have a relatively heavy bias against enjoying the fem!Shepley ship (no hard feelings if you ship it--it's just not my vibe for those two). Ashley writers are welcome to interact platonically as I do adore hers and fem!Shep's friendship, but I will not ship Katrina with your portrayal in any romantic fashion. As for other ships, I am open to ideas, though Katrina's interest is limited to humans, asari, turians, and drell only. I'm also open to rarepairs, OCs, and crossover/au ships with her.Please note that while I have a bias for certain ships, all ships are strictly with chemistry and I do not practice ship exclusivity; I'm not comfortable with ship exclusivity and that is that. I don't go around "collecting" ships or anything ridiculous like that, but exclusivity makes me squicky due to dealing with jealous muns in the past & I'm just not for it.

MASS EFFECT 1

In the first game, Katrina has been back on active duty for a little over a year under Anderson's command, after undergoing recovery from the events of Akuze. During that time, she completed her training at Rio de Janeiro's Interplanetary Combatives Training facility and received her N7 Special Forces designation. While she does not emblazon the N7 logo on her fatigues--instead wearing the alternate regulation BDUs she's granted as a naval officer--she does emblazon it on her armour. Her hair is kept cropped in a short bob, worn down most of the time (though she may wear it up infrequently in a ponytail). She's straightforward and honest, but not above the occasional threat to get what needs to be accomplished done.

MASS EFFECT 2

Mass Effect 2 brings a notable change to Katrina's demeanour. Though she retains her honest, do-gooder nature, she is more inclined to varying levels of ruthlessness now that she is not hampered by the regulations imposed by the Alliance. As well, she becomes quieter and withdrawn from her friends, struggling immensely with the fact that she died and was resurrected. Notably, the lack of her old scars from Akuze--such as the one across her face, and the scarring from skin grafts along her shoulders, upper torso, back, and parts of her legs--make her question her identity. Lastly, since Cerberus allowed her hair to grow while she was being rebuilt, she embraces the longer style, though she finds herself surprised that she's unbothered by it, as she previously kept it short since her experience on Mindoir. Despite being given the option early on, Katrina does not heal the scars on her face until after Grunt's loyalty mission, as she conquers her fear of thresher maws during Grunt's Rite of Passage. Casually, she adopts the doctor outfit (she practically begged Chakwas for one) in order to cover up the lack of scars on her body, though she won't admit it, and she adopts wearing a set of asari commando leathers gifted to her by her late teacher, Iryna Corlizea.

MASS EFFECT 3

Maintaining her long hair, Katrina spends six months under guard at Alliance HQ in Vancouver, her only communication being with Admiral David Anderson--now retired as Councillor--and Lieutenant James Vega. Not even her old friends are able to contact her; any transmissions are blocked, and she finds the experience incredibly lonely. Those six months harden her a little, turning her even more reclusive from her old friends, though she turns to masking the pressure she's put under when she's reinstated and given command of the Normandy. She becomes focused and detached, throwing herself into the war and ignoring her own issues in favour of the number of lives resting on her shoulders.

Alisa Shepard is open, friendly, and welcoming to those around her; she makes a point of being cheery and friendly around those she welcomes to her ship, alien or otherwise. She strives to be positive almost to a fault; though she has her own issues, she's spent much of her life looking for the silver lining to any situation, and in most cases she manages to find it. Despite that, she's not out for glory: she's out to do the right thing, to save people, and ensure that terrible things don't happen to the best of her ability.Despite that, she's a fun-loving person; she enjoys socially interacting with others, often going for drinks or the like. She's not one for much formality; she'd rather be called Alisa than by her rank, though she'll default to such formalities when necessary. Initially born on Earth as Alisa Dubrovsky, Alisa's mother was exposed to dust-form element zero, priming Alisa for biotic potential. Her family was part of the first wave of colonists to be on Shanxi, and was present during the occupation as a toddler. Her father, a marine with the Systems Alliance, was killed during the Occupation. Between her exposure in-utero as well as further exposures during the Occupation of Shanxi, Alisa's biotics became more enhanced than the average human, and at the young age of six, she was sent to Biotic Acclimation and Temperance Training, a program intended for research on human biotics. Given an L2 implant, she was taught at a very young age to control her biotics, and for a time that worked; however, as she grew older and her biotics grew stronger, her implant eventually overloaded and caused severe side-effects, sending her into seizures at the age of thirteen that left her comatose for a year. During the time which she was comatose, her mother passed away, leaving her an orphan.Alisa spent most of her remaining teenage years undergoing extensive therapies, including physical rehabilitation, speech therapy, and psychological evaluation. With nothing left to return to, she enlisted at the age of eighteen with the Systems Alliance, and was upgraded to the L3 implant. As she was eighteen, Alisa opted to change her surname to Shepard to honour her father, who served with distinction during the First Contact War; she sees it as a means for her to carry on his legacy with the Alliance.

Alisa's backstory follows her canonical backstory, but changes her surname to Shepard (Dubrovsky was the surname of her mother, while her father's was Shepard). Technically she is a mix of Earthborn and Colonist, being born on Earth but eventually moving to Shanxi. She also is part of the Biotic Acclimation and Temperance Training program as a young biotic, though the majority of her memories of this incident are gone as a result of the amnesia she experienced. Like Colonist and Earthborn Shepard portrayals, she is an orphan with no siblings.Please note that I will not write a sibling AU with Alisa's Shepard-verse; I will instead default to her primary OC verse. (Given her father's surname is Shepard, it's plausible they could be cousins or otherwise related however; I am open to Shepards who wish to write as her cousin or the like, with Alisa in the primary role of Shepard).Regarding Virmire: In Alisa's canon, Ashley is left behind on Virmire, and Kaidan survives. I am willing to write scenarios where they both survive as part of her Shepard AU, but will default to Kaidan as the VS. Just contact me! I don't have a problem adjusting Virmire to both this way, as I generally prefer both surviving Virmire, but felt that Kaidan surviving was a call Alisa was more likely to make.Lastly, in terms of ending, Alisa’s canon follows Audemus’ Happy Ending Mod, which is most effectively summed up as a modified Destroy ending. During her time serving with the Alliance, Alisa participated in the Skyllian Blitz as part of the ground team. She held off a flank that was overrun, ,single-handedly taking down hundreds of batarians until help arrived. She was granted a number of commendations for her skill and invited to the Interplanetary Combatives Training facility in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She went on to receive her N7 designation and was promoted to Lieutenant-Commander, eventually taking over as the Executive Officer of the SSV Normandy SR-1, under the command of Captain David Anderson.She is classified as a N7-designated biotic Fury Adept class, with a heavy focus on biotic abilities and very little gunplay in combat. Her combat style focuses on being a pure biotic shock troop. Primarily, she uses a mix of CQC biotics, including various mixed martial arts and parkour to take down her targets. She’s capable of enhancing her strikes with biotics, expertly altering her weight for mobility and agility in combat, and focuses on the use of spatial distortion fields, which requires fine-tuned biotic focus.

Ship-wise, Alisa is open for romance starting in ME1. In most cases, I will default to a romance with Kaidan after a while unless we explicitly discuss it; you're free to reference her and Kaidan if you'd like, and I will roll with it. Please note, however, that with Alisa I do not ship Shakarian*. Don't get me wrong: I love Shakarian*, and I'm more than willing to write platonic interactions with them. After all... the only thing she's known in life is being abandoned and unwanted, left on the streets to rot, starve, or freeze to death.Underneath the callous exterior, Amelia is a woman with firm motives and a low tolerance for people--human and alien alike. That goes doubly if you're a politician; she couldn't care less about what you have to say if you're someone who has political authority over others. Those unable to protect themselves, however, are the people Amelia fights for. Duct rats on the Citadel, quarians met with disdain, the impoverished on Omega, colonies attacked by pirates... those are the people Amelia fights hardest for. Batarian slavers, politicians, and xenophobes get no sympathy from Amelia Shepard.On a personal level, Amelia is difficult to know and understand. Struggling with commitment, Amelia would rather appear callous and distant than let someone know that there is a gentleness in her. After all, if she so much as shows she's capable of gentleness, it's something that can be taken advantage of---and she can't let that happen.

It was during her early time in the military that her biotic potential was discovered, and the Alliance quickly fitted her with the L3 implant and taught her to control them. She was a natural; she could hack a console and patch a wound just as quickly as she could send someone flying with her biotics. After all, theft wasn’t just about pickpocketing; it was also about hacking, distraction, and a bit of subterfuge, and the Alliance was finally giving Amelia an outlet for those talents besides mere survival.Those talents proved useful; during a stint of shore leave on Elysium, Amelia quickly found herself unarmed, with only her biotics and omni-tool, fighting against thousands of batarians that threatened to enslave the entire colony. That day, she became known as the hero of the Skyllian Blitz, and was awarded the Star of Terra for her brave actions. From there, she was invited to the Interplanetary Combatives Training (ICT) Academy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she passed and received her N7 designation with flying colours. She was officially classified as an N7 Paladin Sentinel.

Amelia’s portrayal includes a couple of key canon divergencies.The first is that Both Kaidan and Ashley survive the Virmire assault in Mass Effect 1. I’ve always been saddened by the decision between the two of them, and given Amelia’s recklessness and desire to grow as a person, it is likely that she would push to attempt this. When it comes to technonlogy, Gabby would probably strike you as intelligent and analytical, and it wouldn't be an incorrect assessment. She's loved learning and techonlogy ever since she was young, something she likely inherited from both her parents, particularly her mother given Ellen's research on biotic implants. With an eagerness to learn, Gabby's capability with picking up information is often unprecedented.When it comes to leadership, though, and combat... Impulsivity tends to take hold. Sometimes, she'll rush into combat a little too aggressively, though she's generally confident enough to come through the other side mostly unscathed.Gabriella is a girl who follows her heart. Warm and humorous, she keeps things generally casual, with an underlying hint of snark (particularly with Tann and Addison, given their haughty attitudes). Sometimes, this can lead to awkward moments of laughing at her own jokes... no matter how dumb they are.Don't make fun of her height, though. She'll pointedly remind you it helps to give her a shorter punching distance to soft spots on the body.

Gabriella was born on the Citadel space station in 2159as the eldest of twins, with a younger brother named Scott born only moments after her. Her mother, Ellen, was a researcher and a pioneer in the design of biotic implants in humans, eventually resulting in the creation of the L2 and L3 implants, while her father Alec was an N7-trained Alliance soldier who fought in the First Contact War, and eventually became a military attaché on the Citadel.As Gabby grew older, her mother became ill, having developed a terminal neurodegenerative disorder, AEND (Associated Eezo Neurodevelopmental Disorder), caused by her repeated exposure to element zero in her research... and a disease with no cure. This spurred her father's development of illegal AI technology in a desperate attempt to save her, combining Ellen's research with it to create SAM: Simulated Adaptive Matrix. The hope was that SAM would be the means by which Alec could find a cure for Ellen's condition.However, it became clear nothing could be done to save Ellen, and unfortunately, her passing was imminent. Gabby remembers spending the last few hours of her mother's life by her side, while her mother encouraged her to live her life to the fullest.

As part of the Alliance, Gabriella showed natural talent as a leader, with a significant capability in technical expertise as well as the use of her biotics. She became as dangerous with her ability to control mass effect fields as she was tactical and capable of hacking enemy systems. Much of Gabby's training was informally aided by her father's N7 background, and her association with alien species on the Citadel, their cultures, and their histories led to her fascination with science and her desire to search for Prothean technology as part of the Alliance.Unfortunately, her father's dishonorable discharge meant disaster for her career; she was not seen in a positive light, and had she continued, she would have struggled to recoup her family's name.

In terms of canon, when dealing with other Ryders, my portrayal will default to stating that Gabby's brother is Scott. I will change this name only in interactions with other Ryder portrayals (including sis!Ryder portrayals, where it will be stated that they are twin sisters rather than brother/sister).As well, because I feel that it is more fitting for her intelligent, talent, and tactfulness as a Pathfinder, I have opted to increase Gabby's (and therefore Scott's) age to 26 as of 2185 (making her physiologically 26 during the game). This is because it makes little sense to me for her to have gone on exploration digs as part of the Alliance for only a short period of time, despite the amount she talks about it. This means that in trilogy verses set during ME3, she is around 27-28 during the war.In original trilogy verses, her father's discharge results in her distancing from him to save her career, effectively disowning him in order to maintain her own prestige in the Alliance.

I do not have a set canonical romance for Gabby, though I will state that I am ideally open to Gabby in a romance with Jaal primarily. On a secondary level, I am open to romances with Vetra, Suvi, or Liam primarily.For original trilogy, I would primarily be interested in Shepard (male preferred, but open to female), Kaidan, Garrus, Liara, Joker, Thane, and James as options. Other ships are possible, but may require more discussion/chemistry. Miranda is off the table as I feel there is too big of an age gap between them for me to feel comfortable (despite the increase in Gabby's age), and Ashley is off the table for personal reasons.

Ashley has always been a military brat. Born into a family known for their loyalty and service to the Systems Alliance, Ashley followed in the footsteps of her family legacy--her father, grandfather, and great-grandmother--in her service to the human military, despite the challenges that faced her with her family name and her grandfather's decisions on Shanxi.Ashley is at times crude, blunt, and straightfoward, pulling no punches and freely sharing her opinion; while at times her wariness of aliens comes off as prejudiced, it's far from such; Ashley simply treats them as being just as variable as any stranger, knowing that selfishness exists not only in racial differences, but gender, family, occupation, and the like, and aliens are no different than humans in that regard.Deep down, Ashley is a family person, and once you get to know her and earn her respect, she considers you family. To those she considers family, she is fiercely protective and supportive, and certainly not afraid to fight to her last breath for those she cares about.Early on in her career, Ashley deals with a significant amount of self-esteem issues, stemming from her family name and the treatment she has endured because of her grandfather's decisions at the Shanxi garrison. While at first she was able to keep her head down and ignore what was said, much of the treatment has begun to whittle away at her, leaving her at the point where she struggles to value herself on multiple levels, in particular questioning the value of her own life beyond being a grunt with a gun that can shoot and follow orders. Over time she overcomes these struggles, shaping into a tough, analytical, and intelligent woman capable of surviving extreme situations and commanding others.

COMBAT CLASS: SOLDIER

Ashley is an expert marksman, with a particular talent with any gun you put in her hands. Though her skills are primarily in assault rifles, sniper rifles, and heavy pistols, Ashley is also certified with shotguns and SMGs, and often carries an arsenal with her into combat.Though she has some technical expertise, she is certainly not as experienced as those specialized in technology and hacking, Ashley is capable of applying modules that can strengthen her own armour, shields, and improve her accuracy, as well as the use of disruptor rounds against enemy shields and barriers and explosive grenades to flatten enemies and maintain the pressure in combat or hold key defensive points when necessary.

SHIPPING DETAILS

Firstly, Ashley identifies specifically as a heteromantic bisexual** (borderlining heteroflexible, but not quite). What this essentially means is that she showcases minimal sexual attraction toward women in very rare instances, but is generally interested in men, and is only romantically attracted to men. This does create limitations in her shipping flexibility compared to my other muses. Despite that, I'm definitely open to the discussion of platonic dynamics and the possibility of one-sided dynamics with discussion.Ashley is also only attracted to humans, and has no attraction to alien species on any level. In terms of general ship biases, I am always open to discussing any ships, but will be extra excited for Shepley (m!Shepard/Ashley), Wilenko (Kaidan/Ashley), and Willega (Ashley/James). These are not the only ideas I'm open to; I'm more than happy to discuss ideas of other dynamics._{**Cross-orientiation is a normal and valid experience, and I will not hear otherwise. BASIC FAMILY HISTORY

Ashley is the granddaughter of the infamous General Williams, who ran the garrison on Shanxi. During the First Contact War – also known as the Relay 314 Incident, as it’s referred to by turians – her grandfather headed the garrison on the Shanxi colony, near the Shanxi-Theta Mass Relay. After a patrol team was sent through the Shanxi-Theta relay once it was activated–notably, activation of dormant mass relays is considered illegal in Council space–the turians retaliated, attacking the colony on Shanxi. The turians captured the Shanxi colony and fought against human military forces. A guerilla campaign was fought on the ground, which led to the turians leveling entire city blocks in order to take out marine fire teams who were trying to procure food and supplies for the colonists and their troops.With troops starving and civilians dying daily, General Williams then surrendered the colony to the turians. They were later liberated by the Second Fleet, which led to a full-scale war between the humans and turians, which was eventually stopped when the Council stepped in, realizing just how well-trained, equipped, and adaptable the Alliance forces were, and understanding that an ongoing war between the turians and the Alliance could be devastating to the galaxy. A truce was brokered, and humanity was granted an embassy on the Citadel. The surrender of Shanxi, however, destroyed General Williams’ career. Though he was never charged, he was touted as the first soldier to ever surrender to an alien force, leading to his arrest, demotion, and eventual departure from the Alliance. He worked construction in the colonies until his passing. Attempts have been made to exonorate Williams, but nothing official has ever been done.The destruction of General Williams’ career led to him becoming a pariah for the Alliance, which later affected the careers of both his son (Ashley’s father) and Ashley herself.

pre-military life

Ashley was born on the colony world Sirona in the year 2158. Ashley comes from a family with a long line of Alliance soldiers; notably, her great-grandmother, grandfather, and her father all swore the Oath of Service. Ashley is the eldest of four children, with three younger sisters: Abby, Lynn, and Sarah. Of her siblings, Ashley is the only one who pursued a career with the Alliance Military, though she and all of her siblings are trained in various forms of self-defense.As a military family, Ashley has never attributed one particular “place” as home. She moved at least six times before finishing grade school, moving with her mother and sisters to be closer to her father when he was deployed. Though her father was rarely around, taking whatever posting the Alliance would give, Ashley was incredibly close with him, spending as much time as she could with him whenever he was around. While her sisters had a tendency to be “girlier”--focusing on things like art, dance, or in the case of Abby, elegant swordplay and “dresses you have to tie her into”--Ashley was much grittier, preferring marine hand-to-hand as she grew up, and even learning to shoot under her father’s guidance. As she states--”[Sarah] wasn’t the loud tomboy crashing around like I was.”Finally, as she reached high school, Ashley spent most of her years on the colony world Amaterasu, eventually graduating from there. She remained in her own little bubble during her high school years; she wasn’t part of the popular kids, but she wasn’t bullied terribly like others. One key point of contention was a few of the other military-family children; many, knowing her family’s history, would make snide remarks as she passed, though she made a point to ignore them; it was pointless to give them any attention, and she knew that.In her senior year, Ashley applied to three military academies; each and every application was denied. Despite this, she enlisted with the Alliance as a marine, determined to put her skills to use.

EARLY MILITARY CAREER

Not long before she was set to leave for basic training, her father sat her down for a straightforward conversation. He told her exactly how the Alliance was going to handle things and left her with one piece of advice: “A Williams has to be better than the best, just to avoid suspicion.” Part of Ashley already knew this, but her father’s words made it more of a reality.Then, he told her that he’d be retiring; he claimed it was so that they only had to deal with one family member out there fighting in the danger of space, not two. Despite the challenge she knew she faced, Ashley was bright-eyed and headstrong, ready to take on whatever was thrown at her.Being the best of the best–or better than the best–wasn’t hard for Ashley. She was already good–arguably one of the best–but with an unrivaled determination to push herself as hard as possible. Assigned to the Recruit Training Depot in Macapá, Brazil, Ashley gained her certification with the Alliance’s standard M7 Lancer assault rifle, as well as light and standard-weight combat hardsuits. She went on to complete zero-gravity combat aboard the Rakesh Sharma Orbital Platform in Earth geosynchronous orbit, followed by Hostile Environment Training at Fort Charles Upham on Titan, one of Saturn’s moons, during which she was awarded a commendation for her bold assault technique in a field exercise simulating an attack on turian point defense emplacements.Ashley’s drill instructor, Gunnery Chief Ellison, noted that Ashley possessed steadfast endurance and aggressive instincts, promoting her to squad leader in the process. As squad leader, she threw herself into tutoring and training the lesser-skilled members of her training unit, earning her a promotion to platoon guide. She received unanimous positive feedback on her leadership skills, and was praised for her focus on team-building exercises by fellow soldiers.But despite numerous glowing performance reviews, Ashley was frequently denied any further opportunities for advancement. She was put on groundside posting after groundside posting, despite being more than capable of serving with the Alliance fleet. She lost count of the number of times she applied for shipboard postings; every single one was denied, without explicit reasons. Nevertheless, Ashley trudged on, holding her head up high and continuing to be the best soldier she could be.That all changed when her father died. Not long after she’d made the rank of Gunnery Chief–at which point her father’s first action was to salute her, as she was a superior officer–her father became incredibly sick and hospitalized. Ashley was given family leave to be with her sisters, but as her father’s condition worsened, she knew what was going to happen. His death left her as the one to continue the Williams family’s legacy, to bring it back to its former glory, and she intended to do just that. In the wake of his death, Ashley shouldered the burden of their family name, just as her father had. Ashley’s grief was brief… and private. She didn’t really grieve for her father, even though she should have; instead, she let her family lean entirely on her in the process, putting on a brave face for her sisters, and for her mother.Much of Ashley’s treatment not only at the hands of the Alliance, but also at the hands of other commanding officers who did little to hide their prejudice of the Williams name, did a number on her self-esteem. Ashley became focused on being the perfect soldier; she lived by the mantra “not a hair out of place, not a toe out of line” in order to avoid any level of suspicion. She had to be perfect, with little expression of herself as person in comparison. Over time, this grew to a level of depersonalization; to anyone around her, she was Williams, not Ashley. Much of this became internalized, leading Ashley to push herself harder, despite never feeling like she was worth anything she was fighting for.

EDEN PRIME

The events of Eden Prime heavily changed Ashley’s career, as well as had a significant impact on her personal growth.A Prothean beacon had been unearthed at a digsite near the colony, and the 212 was assigned to guard and protect it, despite only being off duty for a few hours. Despite glowing reviews and being a nominal squad leader, Ashley wasn’t given command on their mission that fateful night; their lieutenant, aware of Ashley’s heritage, relegated command to Sergeant Donkey.This was neither the first nor the last time she’d heard such prejudice over the years; it’d shown in other commanding officers she’d dealt with, as well as with her repeated rejection by the Alliance. Despite this, she grudgingly accepted the situation, knowing full well the reasoning; because her grandfather had given up to the turians, it was believed Ashley would be likely to do the same under fire. Despite Donkey’s later assertion that she should be the one leading the mission, Ashley knew it was a fact she simply couldn’t change.As they were making their way to the beacon, the six-man Dog Squad–led by Sergeant Donkey–encountered Able and Bravo squads, who had been sent ahead on a transport, while Dog Squad headed to the beacon on foot. Their job was to rendezvous with Bravo Squad, but they were unable to raise them on the comms. They were able to reach Able and Charlie Squads, which had already reached the dig site; despite that, Bravo had been out of contact for hours.A scan of the area determined what had happened; Bravo Team had been slaughtered, almost mercilessly, gunned down with unknown weaponry. Bravo didn’t even have a chance to draw their weapons before they were gunned down. It was fourteen lives lost in the blink of an eye.Then, the comms went off. Able and Charlie were under attack, radioing for help; at that moment, Sergeant Donkey relegated command to Ashley, stating his reasons clearly: “This just became a real mission. We need a real leader.” Ashley knew what she had to do: she had to make sure her team could do their jobs. She had to make sure Dog Squad could help their comrades.Everything happened fast. They double-timed it to the beacon, finding geth along the way. They were spotted; Ashley called orders left, right, and center, tactical move after tactical move. Despite that, it wasn’t enough; she ordered Jenner to get on the comms, to call for help; Pennyloafer lay dead, Jenner had been killed, and she couldn’t hear Donkey, Rasputin, or Bates any longer.She was on her own.She fought hard, despite being surrounded, managing to fight her way out to escape. It became a game of cat and mouse, with Ashley ducking around the geth for hours afterward. She lost count of how long–but it was at least eight hours, after a two-day trek to the digsite from the main colony. She got lucky. Just then, Commander Shepard, along with Lieutenant Alenko, showed up just as the geth caught up to her. She was saved.But she was the only one left of the 212. Of thirty-one marines, Ashley Williams was the only survivor. It was the first time she asked herself, why me?

THE HUNT FOR SAREN

After being rescued from Eden Prime, Ashley was reassigned to the SSV Normandy SR-1, under the command of–and at the request of–Captain David Anderson, with the support of Lieutenant Kaidan Alenko, who headed the ship’s marine core. On some level, it felt like nothing more than a consolation prize: it was the Alliance’s underhanded way of congratulating her for living… and because two very respected soldiers wanted her under their command. Despite that, she felt guilty; the only reason there was even an opening was because of the death of Private Richard Jenkins, who had been part of the ground team with Shepard and Alenko. Despite that, she was a key witness in the events of Eden Prime, as relayed to the Council, though she was far from surprised at their lack of help.Ashley remained with the Normandy throughout the chase of Saren; she visited the cold-hearted (and cold-fingered) corporations on Noveria, and helped to liberate the colony of Feros from the geth (and the Thorian–a semi-sentient, spore-generating “plant monster”, as Ashley refers to it), among other events.But despite feeling like a welcome part of the crew, Ashley still felt out of place. With the events of Eden Prime looming on her conscience, she felt a growing discomfort with everything going on. She rarely, if ever, left the ship; with the Normandy being her first shipboard posting, she was determined to hold on to it. Despite her glowing confidence in front of her superiors, even as the command of the ship changed hands from Anderson to Shepard, Ashley remained her old self: honest, unwaveringly loyal to the Alliance, and the perfect soldier. Her drive to cling to whatever crumbs the Alliance threw at her pushed her to seek even more perfection in her work… and that, slowly but surely, continued to whittle at her. Despite that, she did make friends; Shepard’s command gave her an unwavering respect for the Commander, and she even grew closer to Lieutenant Alenko, whose gentle, friendly personality was more than enough to put her at ease and give her some space where she could be herself.And then… there was Virmire. A salarian recon team on Virmire had information on Saren, but with the unclear message, the Council feared the STG team was in danger. They caught up to the team and devised a plan to destroy the facility: the STG team’s drive core could be modified into a large-scale nuke, capable of decimating the facility. One team would draw the geth’s attention to the front of the facility to take out the AA guns, while Shepard would secure the bomb site and allow the second team to arm the nuke, delivered by the Normandy. As the bomb site was secured, the AA team–despite disabling the towers–were pinned down, unable to make it to the rendezvous point. As Shepard raced to help, more geth poured into the bomb-site, leaving the Commander with a horrific decision.Shepard had to choose. There was no saving both of them; it was either Kaidan, or it was Ashley.Shepard chose Ashley. *In the blink of an eye, Ashley lost the first close friend she’d made since joining the Alliance. Just like that, Kaidan was gone; he was left behind, dying in the blast that destroyed the facility. It was a decision Ashley couldn’t wrap her head around. Kaidan was the superior officer. That alone was a reason for him to have been chosen over her. Kaidan had medals, commendations, and an excellent career ahead of him; Ashley was a marine from a blacklisted family whose hope of going anywhere could be considered a practical joke. But what dug at her most was the fact that Kaidan hadn’t hesitated. While Ashley had no fear of dying for the Alliance, having Kaidan’s life sacrificed for hers–even if he proudly agreed to it–was almost devastating to Ashley. She couldn’t comprehend the fact that she’d be chosen over someone else, because the Alliance had drilled one thing into her: that she was worthless. That she would never be worthy of anything she’d earned. That no matter how hard she fought, she’d never get what she’d earned. In that moment on Virmire, she’d truly believed her only means of clearing the Williams name was martyrdom; otherwise, she was insignificant in the long run.That was the second time Ashley asked, why me?It was thanks to Shepard that Ashley realized just how far she’d fallen; in the process of trying to be the perfect soldier for the Alliance, Ashley had lost her self-worth. She’d been beaten down, whittled away by the Alliance’s constant prejudice, reduced to a marine with a death wish. It was a frightening thought, even as Ashley herself looked at it. But she knew she couldn’t let Kaidan’s death be in vain; she couldn’t let his sacrifice go without doing something about it. Thus, she told herself plainly: I have to be worth Kaidan’s life. She had to be a soldier worth the sacrifice he’d made, and honour that sacrifice for the rest of her life. She had to make her old friend proud.With a sense of renewed vigor, Ashley threw herself into helping Shepard, focusing on what was truly important: fighting to make the galaxy a little bit safer, just as she’d originally intended. She found her spark again, despite Kaidan’s death weighing heavily on her; Shepard’s influence was enough to push her in the right direction, giving her something she could aim for. They defeated Saren, saving the Citadel in the process, and were praised as heroes for their actions.

ALCHERA & TIME SKIP

After Shepard’s defeat, the crew of the Normandy was sent on a few routine expeditions to ensure that human colonies were no longer under assault from the geth. The Council didn’t fully believe the Reaper threat despite Shepard’s attempts to make it clear to them; they simply believed Sovereign was nothing more than an advanced geth ship, rather than the sentient being it claimed itself to be on Virmire. Sent out to the fringes of the Attican Traverse, with the goal of eliminating any pockets of geth resistance that remained.As always… things did not go as planned. En-route to their destination, the Normandy picked up a foreign ship on its scanners, one that did not match geth signatures, and within moments, they were under attack. The alien vessel assaulted the Normandy, burning through its shields and resulting in a mass evacuation order. As Ashley herded their crewmates to the escape pods, she met up with Shepard, who gave her one final order: to get to the escape pod. Their pilot, Joker, was refusing to leave the cockpit, and it was Shepard’s job to get him out of there.Joker made it to the escape pod. Shepard did not.It was the third time she asked, why me?First, it was her squad that died. Then, her first close friend in a long time sacrificed his life so she could live. Now… the first commanding officer that truly respected her skill and talent was gone. In under a year, Ashley had lost three of the best things she’d ever had. The loss was heavy on her, leading to her taking an eight-month sabbatical from her duties to recuperate from the loss. During that time, she was a witness for a military tribunal for Flight Lieutenant Jeff Moreau–Joker–who was the pilot of the Normandy. Ashley boldly–and expectedly–took Joker’s side, and although the pilot was deemed not at fault for the ship’s crash and the death of twenty-one of their crew members, including Shepard, he was released from active duty with the Alliance.After her sabbatical, Ashley returned to the Alliance and was granted one grace for serving with distinction under Shepard: she was finally allowed to attend OCS training, a decision that was just enough to lift her spirits. Under the recommendation from senior Alliance figures (Admiral Steven Hackett & Captain David Anderson, if not councillor) and the human Councillor (Anderson or Donnel Udina, depending on Shepard’s choice) Ashley was granted admission into the S-Class training program, better known as Alliance Special Tactics training. Though part of her was convinced that it was nothing more than a consolation prize for serving with distinction.Nevertheless, like any other breadcrumb she’d been given, Ashley took the opportunity and ran with it. She aced every one of her courses, passing each one with flying colours; she even broke records to unexpected degrees. Her talent was unmatched in comparison to her peers. During training, she was promoted to Operations Chief, and put in charge of Hunter Platoon of the Alliance’s Marine Reconnaissance Unit. She was deployed in the closing stages of Task Force Justice’s operations, in relation to post-Citadel attack geth activities in Terminus space.

HORIZON & THE COLLECTORS

As part of Hunter Platoon, Ashley was assigned to a number of covert surveillance and recon following the disappearance of several human colonies, disguised under a Colonial Outreach program operated by the Alliance. On the colony of Horizon, Ashley was attacked by the Collectors, who had been behind the disappearances; Ashley’s intel indicated that Cerberus might have been behind the attack, intel that had been intentionally planted by Cerberus for her to follow, in an attempt to subtly turn her against Shepard. Ashley ran into Shepard on the colony, and couldn’t bring herself to trust her old Commander; with the appearance of her old marine friend after two years, Ashley struggled to believe it was really Shepard, not wanting to believe either option: that Shepard had intentionally gone dark for two years, leaving Ashley and all of their friends in the dark… or that Shepard had really died, and somehow come back from the dead. Nevertheless, Ashley identified that the Collectors were behind the attack, as well as Shepard’s involvement with Cerberus.Not long after, Ashley’s platoon was reassigned to Operation Gorgon, though Ashley herself was not in command. In the process, their team suffered 4 KIA, including their commanding officer; in the process, Ashley assumed temporary command of the operation, and received the Silver Star commendation for her efforts, as well as a promotion to First Lieutenant.Following that, Ashley completed her officer’s commission, and was given the highest ranking in S-Class: S1, due to her exemplary performance in the field and high technical scores in training. She was seconded to Admiral Anderson’s command of the Normandy SR-2 after it was turned over to the Alliance by Shepard, and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander.

THE REAPER WAR

Ashley was present at Alliance Headquarters in Vancouver when the Reapers attacked, as she was on shore leave while the Normandy SR-2 was undergoing retrofits to bring it back up to Alliance standards. Despite knowing that Shepard was imprisoned for associating with Cerberus–as well as the Alpha Relay Incident, which destroyed the entirety of the Bahak system–Ashley couldn’t bring herself to visit her old CO. There was simply too much negativity and too many hurt feelings for her to visit Shepard just yet; she needed time to come to terms with what had really happened.Things happened quickly when the Reapers hit. Ashley found herself near a collapsed building alongside Lieutenant James Vega, and quickly sprung into action; she managed to get in radio contact with Admiral Anderson, who was with Shepard. They fought their way to the spaceport, meeting up with Joker–who had taken control of the Normandy with EDI’s assistance–and picked up Shepard and Anderson. As they were leaving Earth, Anderson opted to stay behind, choosing to reinstate Shepard as CO of the Normandy, leaving Ashley as the second-in-command on the ship. Under Hackett’s guidance, they headed to the Prothean Archives on Mars, meeting up with Liara along the way and finding out that Cerberus was, as always, just one step ahead of them in the fight.After fighting their way through in an attempt to retrieve the data, a chase ensued with Dr. Eva Coré, who had hacked in to steal the data. Upon James Vega’s reckless attempt to stop her by crashing the Normandy’s shuttle into Eva’s, Ashley was faced with a dangerous situation of her own: trapped on one side of the burning shuttle with Liara, while Shepard and Vega were on the opposite side, it was revealed that Eva Core was not a human, but a synthetic A.l. designed by Cerberus. Pushing an injured Liara out of the way, Ashley found herself at Eva’s mercy, and despite Shepard’s attempt to stop her, Eva was ordered to kill her, mercilessly slamming Ashley’s head against the downed shuttle. After a few heavy hits, Ashley was left critically wounded, and though the Normandy escaped with her on board, her life hung in the balance. She was rushed to Huerta Memorial Hospital on the Citadel, where the expertise of the doctors barely saved her life.Though she woke up alone, it was a moment of understanding for Ashley as she did. She didn’t ask, “why not me?” like she ought to have. She understood now why Kaidan had done what he had done years ago: it was just the right thing to do. Ashley hadn’t thought about her life having any more or less value the moment she protected Liara; she’d simply done it without question, doing her job even if it put her in danger. Concurrent visits from Shepard, as well as the rest of her crew, helped Ashley to come to terms with the Commander’s involvement with Cerberus, though she retained some level of reticence.While in the care of Huerta’s doctors on the Citadel, Ashley was approached by Councillor Udina, who offered her Spectre status. Though she was initially uncertain of the offer, she eventually took it, on some level knowing that it was what she wanted; despite that, she still sought Shepard’s approval on the matter, almost seeing the situation as unbelievable. During Cerberus’ later attempted coup d’état of the Citadel, Ashley–still barely recovered from her injuries on Mars–single-handedly fought her way through the Presidium with nothing more than a pistol, making her way through the Citadel until she reached the turian, asari, and human councilors. Urging them in the direction of a landing pad where a shuttle was waiting, Ashley did her best to defend them despite their other personal guards dying along the way; she was left as their only line of defense, and she knew at that moment it was a true test of her capabilities as a Spectre.Then, she found herself faced with the hardest decision of her life: Shepard was there… and the situation looked dire. There she was, pointing a gun at her friends and her old commander, with Udina claiming Shepard was working with Cerberus. Despite that, her trust in Shepard remained, and evidence later made clear what really happened: Councilor Donnel Udina made a deal with Cerberus, intending to give up the Citadel to them in exchange for his own protection. Despite the horror of pointing a gun at Shepard, Ashley requested to return to the Normandy, apologizing deeply for her mistrust of her old friend.
And return, she did. She quickly took up the mantle of second-in-command^** as she’d previously been, doing everything she possibly could to help Shepard’s campaign against the Reapers. As things went on, Ashley was later faced with an old posting: Horizon, the very colony she’d been on that was nearly lost to the Collectors. Once again, the people of Horizon were in danger, and Ashley was sickened by that fact. Nevertheless, she trudged on through to the very end; and as victory shone down on them with the Reapers defeated, Ashley finally felt like she’d reached a place she–and all those she lost–could be proud of.^{**Ashley's position as SIC is verse-dependent/dependent on Shepard portrayal, but by Alliance military rules (as the Normandy is an Alliance vessel) she is considered the Alliance's SIC on board as the next highest-ranking Alliance combat officer, and not necessarily by ship-defined hierarchy set by the ship's commander. I'm more than happy to discuss this on a case-by-case basis depending on portrayal!}

00. regarding verses

Most if not all of these verses are present in the Mass Effect canon. Unless otherwise indicated, you may assume it takes place in the Mass Effect universe, during the Mass Effect timeline. Unless I have a specific, identified crossover verse listed, please do not assume I am open to making one, as indicated in my rules; I’m very, very heavily focused on the Mass Effect universe with Ashley specifically.

01. virmire survivors

This is a preferential AU where the change is relatively simple: both Ashley and Kaidan survive the assault on Virmire, going on to partake in the events of Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3. In most cases, I will default to my ME2 Squadmate AU for Ashley (see below), but I am flexible on other ideas. The key points below are simply what I default to unless otherwise discussed, so if you would like to discuss specifics or an alternative, reach out to me!

02. ME2 SQUADMATE.

This is an idea that I’ve recently come up with that revolves around Ashley being part of the Normandy’s crew during ME2 era. In this AU, both Ashley and Kaidan survived Virmire. Kaidan’s role will take on the canon elements in this AU (Horizon, Mars, Citadel Coup, etc). There are two versions as to where Ashley can be recruited for some flexibility in storytelling depending on portrayal, so feel free to decide which version you prefer most! I will flexibly default to one or the other depending on thread.

GENERAL DETAILS: Not even Kaidan is aware of the details of Ashley’s reason for being on the Normandy (unless informed by Ashley herself). She makes it clear her choice to help with the Collectors is only based on her loyalty to Shepard, and not any loyalty to Cerberus (as a result, she will generally be cold or even dismissive of characters like Miranda, Jacob, or Kelly). Ashley is also loyal to Joker, and will look out for him.Ashley will also ask Shepard if they have visited Alchera / the Normandy’s wreckage and, if Shepard hasn’t visited yet, she will ask to go with, claiming she “needs to go in order to put [the crash] behind her”. Elements of this will show her survivor’s guilt from the crash, but generally at this point, her visit to Alchera will allow her to fully accept what happened and move on with her guilt.
During this, one unique part of Ashley’s AU is that during the Collectors’ attack on the ship, Ashley told Shepard she would remain behind with the ship on a hunch, or gut feeling, “just in case”. She was present on the ship, but was not able to help save the crew, and helped to defend Joker. She was injured in the fighting. She will also have jumped in to defend Joker when he was being talked to afterward, and depending on how the conversation goes and her built rapport with Shepard, she may direct the blame to herself for the crew being kidnapped (as to her, it feels like a repeat of Eden Prime).

LOYALTY MISSION: Ashley’s Loyalty Mission consists of responding to a Collector attack on the Amaterasu colony (where her mother and sisters are living) when the colony suddenly goes dark. Ashley will be worried, frantic, and on-edge on the ship when the news comes in, and will need to be calmed down prior to the mission (though she remains very on edge throughout its entirety). Thomas (Sarah’s future husband) is present during the mission as he was part of the crew, and will serve as the third “squadmate” for the mission. There are 3 possible outcomes to the mission: Ashley’s whole family survives (“full” success), Ashley’s sisters survive but her mother is killed (“partial” success, results in Ashley being critically injured during the Suicide Mission), and Ashley’s entire family perishes (“full” failure, in which Ashley will die during the Suicide Mission). For RP purposes, I’ll ideally stick to the first 2. If no option is discussed, I will assume it was a full success.I AM ALWAYS INTERESTED IN WRITING ASHLEY’S LOYALTY MISSION AS A THREAD. I have a lot of ideas on how it will go with a basic framework adapable to each Shepard, and the nature of the thread can change based on Shepard’s decisions. Most of the time, if it’s looking like it’ll go sideways I’ll discuss with the Shepard’s mun and we can work out a solution, but I’ve put a lot of work and thought into Ashley’s loyalty mission and always love writing it, no matter if I write it with five different people. The potential for different resolutions interests me greatly.

SUICIDE MISSION: During the Suicide Mission, Ashley is an option for a Team Leader, but will always return with the crew at the latter point unless she’s brought to fight the Proto-Reaper (can be sent alongside another squadmate for that–sending her alone on a full success loyalty mission results in her being critically injured protecting the crew, though she will survive). During that point, she will fight to defend the Normandy from the Collectors akin to how she fought on Eden Prime. In a partial success version of her loyalty mission, Ashley will be critically injured still if sent with a squadmate (unless she is sent with Mordin specifically). Ashley can also be optionally brought along to the Proto-Reaper fight. Much of this is based on Ashley’s major role in ME3 being taken by Kaidan, which is why there are specifics to it of this nature.If Ashley is not sent back with the crew (or denied), and the Med-Bay Upgrade was not acquired (even if it isn't used to heal your scars, Shep!), she will not survive holding the line. (This is because in paying homage to the Mars incident of ME3, her injuries will be critical, and the Med-Bay Upgrade's advanced dermal regeneration unit will be required to treat her injuries. For Shepard portrayals, if you didn't purchase it because it was only used for scars, we can say you did if you don't want her to perish!)If Ashley is brought along to fight the Proto-Reaper, she may be critically injured (partial success) or killed (full failure) during the fight depending on the status of her loyalty mission.

basic details

Alisa is a Captain with the Systems Alliance Navy and head of the frigate SSV Romanov. She is classified as a N7-designated biotic Adept class, with a heavy focus on biotic abilities and very little gunplay in combat.While she is loosely based on the N7 Fury Adept class from the multiplayer (specifically, her armour is the same as the Fury, but with a clear breather mask rather than the glowing one) her combat style focuses on being a pure biotic shock troop. Primarily, she uses a mix of CQC biotics, including various mixed martial arts and parkour to take down her targets. She’s capable of enhancing her strikes with biotics, expertly altering her weight for mobility and agility in combat, and focuses on the use of spatial distortion fields, which requires fine-tuned biotic focus.

lore: biotic implants

Since we weren’t given a lot of information on how biotic implants work for humans, I’ve devised a bit of lore that I use with Alisa, based on the information we’ve got from Kaidan and his L2 implants in the series.Effectively, a biotic’s strength is a mix of both their implant (which allows them to harness their biotics) and how “concentrated” (or how many) eezo nodules there are on their nervous system. Stronger biotics like Adepts and Vanguards have more eezo nodules compared to something like a Sentinel-class biotic, and as a result are capable of generating stronger mass effect fields. However, they’re also limited to how much power their biotic implant can handle.Thus, the issues with L2 implants: biotics whose output (such as Alisa and, in this case, Kaidan) couldn’t be handled by their implant (Kaidan being an incredibly mild case–L2s allow the abilities to spike higher than an L3 because L3s have more failsafes in place to prevent severe cases) caused neurological issues, as the feedback that the implant couldn’t handle effectively reverberated back into their brain. This caused severe neurological issues, and in the case of L2 implants, the “best case scenario” was the migraines (aka, Kaidan’s case). L3s, though weaker, were designed to throttle that output and wean it off elsewhere, which is why L3’s / L3R biotics lost power compared to L2s.Then, we get into the L4 and L5 series: L4 included the monitoring VI, which could monitor the output capability as well as other factors a biotic needs to be aware of: hydration, heart rate, and other similar vitals to maintain form in combat (as they burn calories and electrolytes like mad). L5’s (including the L5x for adepts and L5n for Vanguards) have the same monitoring VI, but an upgraded version, and possess better output (comparable to old L2s) without issues, as their design includes better failsafes to allow that output without neurological damage.In short: this is the lore I work off of for Alisa’s implants; the reason her L2s failed is the technology wasn’t strong enough to handle the output she could generate, and it wasn’t until her L5x that she had no issues with her implants (the L4 series still gave her mild headaches). This is a brief breakdown of Alisa's backstory and history, parts of which are relevant to her Shepard verse as well. Please note that the content of this basic backstory is independent of her Squadmate Verse, so details are subject to change (see verses for more details). EARLY life

Alisa was born in the year 2154 in St. Petersburg, Russia, Earth. Her mother was one of many exposed to small amounts of eezo while pregnant during an incident visiting her birth family in Vancouver, Canada. Her father was part of the Alliance Navy, and because of his position, Alisa and her mother frequently moved around a lot, leading to her fluency in both English and Russian. Eventually, she moved to the Shanxi colony with her parents as one of the first colonists.Of course, then the First Contact War began. Alisa and her mother, Alessandra, were one of few survivors left from the colony; the First Contact War left Alisa without a father, and bore a distaste for Turians that would forever alter her life going forward. After the fall of Shanxi, her mother refused to stay, instead moving back to Earth to live with her family in Canada, while Alisa continued her studies remotely via the extranet.

At six, she began to show an aptitude for biotics, though Alisa kept her abilities secret, so as not to frighten her traumatized mother. Not long after, a representative from Conatix Industries approached them, explaining the nature of these odd phenomenons happening around the young girl, and offering her an opportunity: Biotic Acclimation and Temperance Training, where she could learn to control them and understand them, rather than have them go wild and cause unexplained incidents around their house.Thus, she was outfitted with an L2 implant, and went from lifting nothing more than pens and small papers to larger, heavier objects with relative ease.What she didn't know was the damage the L2 implant was doing to her brain. Slowly but surely, she began to have micro-seizures in her sleep, unnoticed by her trainers and her peers; it wasn't until she was ten that it got much worse, leading to her having a full-blown seizure while training her biotics by the age of thirteen. Because of the severity, she was put into an induced coma, where she was kept for well over a year while research progressed enough to determine the cause of what happened to her, as well as to protect her brain from further neurological damage. During that time, her mother passed away from a stroke, unable to handle the stress of her daughter's condition.After a year and three months, she was released from her induced coma, and quickly moved into therapy classes for her motor skills and speech. There was one thing she was barred from doing, however, and that was using her biotics to any degree. She spent years in therapy, working to keep up with her studies and catch up the time she'd missed in the process. In the process of waking up alone without the ability to move or speak, Alisa developed cleithrophobia--the fear of being trapped without escape, which can specifically be triggered by her being completely immobilized (especially without her biotics).

At eighteen, now that she was legally an adult, Alisa had a decision to make. She was enlisted with the Alliance, throwing herself right into basic training to further improve her PT skills, and scoring high on her aptitude tests. With biotics now integrated as part of the Alliance military training, Alisa was offered an opportunity when she completed it: the option to undergo a dangerous, but necessary surgery to replace her L2 implant with a retrofitted L3 (L3-R), a new implant that was developed specifically with those wired with the old L2 configuration that had experienced severe side effects from their implants.She knew the complications and risks--and she didn't care. Making the decision to undergo the surgery, Alisa was subject to more therapy after the surgery, something she was no stranger to. Not long after, she quickly began to excel in her biotic mastery with the new implant, and for the first time in years, she felt alive again.As a skilled biotic, Alisa quickly pursued an officer's degree in military leadership, scoring high on the aptitude tests for those and beginning her military career at the age of twenty, earning herself a promotion to Gunnery Chief in the process. From there she was assigned to the SSV Romanov which, at the time, was under the command of Commander Andarez Lalonde, someone whom Alisa came to be good friends with. Alisa was Lalonde's first encounter with a biotic crew member, particularly one who had high scores on military aptitude tests, most specifically the ones involving control of her biotic abilities. Though not labelled as a particularly powerful biotic (at least, not in comparison to other L2s), Alisa's precision and control was at a point for her age that could not simply be "taught" to an individual.

Evaluating the skills talked about in her file, however, was Lalonde's first course of action. Given orders to investigate an Alliance vessel, the SSV Iqaluit, on the uninhabitable chlorine-atmosphere planet Tarith, with which the Alliance had lost contact, the Iqaluit's original ground team had consisted of primarily scientists with Alliance marine backup, surveying the planet to further attempt to understand its chlorine atmosphere and whether colonization and expansion was possible on the surface. Despite the simplicity of the mission, however, contact had been lost, and another team was required to investigate.Upon landing, Andarez' ground team -- consisting of Alisa and two other marines -- found the encampment, including the vessel, seemingly abandoned. Or, at least, abandoned of any living life forms. What they found was little more than charred remains, ones that were clearly marked as human by their size and shape. Initially, it wasn't clear what had caused the bodies to be charred and lit on fire, and upon investigation, the body count was less than that of the crew of the ship. Speculation pointed to possible survivors upon the ship still there, though nobody seemed to be making their presence known.And that, of course, was with good reason. Before they could investigate the vessel itself, Andarez' team was ambushed by a literal mob of klixen, followed by one other horrifying creature: a harvester. The klixen presence made it obvious who had charred the bodies, or in this particular case, what creature had charred the bodies. Before they could react, at least six or seven of the klixen had overwhelmed one of their comrades, burning him to death. If they'd been able to breathe the atmosphere, the scent of charred human flesh would have been the only scent in the air.Alisa, however, was quick to attract the klixen's attention before they could reach the second marine part of the detail with them. Andarez was a trained sniper; he was used to someone else acting as the shock troop, and having a biotic trooper on his team proved useful. Alisa worked to keep the waves of klixen at bay, with the harvester dropping numerous amounts at them, while Andarez kept tabs on their injured comrade and dealt with the harvester. Though initially skeptical about how useful a biotic could be as a front-line troop, Lalonde was now convinced he'd picked just the right biotic soldier for his team. For her commendations, she was promoted to Operations Chief.From there on, Alisa became a respected member of the SSV Romanov's crew, taking on smaller-scale missions clearing areas of dangerous wildlife and defending construction workers and colonists as they worked to expand on Earth's colonies. Further colonization, after all, wouldn't be possible without some aid from the Alliance, and as a biotic who could keep things occupied for extensive amounts of time -- and help to take out a Harvester on her first run with her CO -- she proved useful on the front lines and ground teams. By the time she was 24, she'd moved from her position as Operations Chief to Staff Lieutenant, earning recommendations from her CO dealing with colony defense and expansion.

the skyllian blitz

Then, however, came the Skyllian Blitz. The Romanov was one of the first vessels on sight during the Blitz, though rather than aiding in the ground raid, their efforts were focused on the aerial assaults against batarian pirate ships. Alisa, however, was running ground team communications from the Romanov, coordinating teams on the ground to put her tactical knowledge to the test. Upon hearing of an unguarded flank barely being held, Alisa arranged a marine team led by herself as reinforcements to help bolster the defenses, earning the moniker of "Elysium's Fury" by civilians who saw her destructive biotic displays against the assailants. (For War Hero Shepard portrayals: Alisa led the marine team that arrived as reinforcements to assist Shepard.)After the battle, Commander Lalonde was awarded a Palladium Star for his efforts defending Elysium, leaving Alisa proud to have served as a member of the Romanov under his command. Alisa, however, was not without her own proud accomplishments; in the year 2180, having undergone further training as part of the Alliance Military, she received her B7 vocation as a biotic specialist shock troop. having taken the time to undergo three years of training and testing in order to receive the commendation; as a result of the Blitz, she earned her promotion to Lieutenant-Commander.

new canton & lalonde's death

Soon, however, they were left with the cleanup duties, particularly in the few years after Torfan. One such mission, near a small colony on New Canton in 2182, had Captain Lalonde and Commander Dubrovsky, along with a troop of four marines, investigating a pirate ship that had landed near the colony. With worries that Torfan hadn't been enough warning for pirate raiders in the Terminus Systems, Lalonde's team was sent to "investigate", with one requirement to the mission: getting rid of the pirates, one way or another. Normally, it would have included a group of three, or perhaps four marines to simply investigate; however, taking out the pirates was one of the key goals of ensuring the sacrifices at Elysium and Torfan weren't in vain.That mission, however, was quick to go awry. Once inside the large ship -- the interior of which was primarily designed as a mobile facility and base of operations -- their squad was able to quickly take cover positions, though in the ensuing chaos of marines versus pirate raiders, the sniper rifle shot that killed Captain Lalonde came unexpectedly. Alisa saw who it was -- a Turian sniper, which ultimately pissed her off even more. Having served for years under Captain Lalonde, the two had become more than just 'good friends' -- he'd become one of the only people close to her since the loss of her family, and one of the only people who knew the full extent of the hell she'd gone through to use her biotics.Now forced into the role of acting CO for their mission, Alisa became a true shock troop: she was purely merciless towards the pirates that had now taken just one more thing from her. The batarians, turians, not even the humans could be spared -- but the turians, especially, she killed in cold blood, without a second thought. To the marines with her, she became the reason they might say "you should never piss off a good biotic"; -- being able to biotically toss them into walls and damage them right through their armour was a dangerous enemy. With the help and coordination of her fellow Marines, the remainder of their team managed to complete the mission, despite losing their commanding officer in the firefight. For her efforts to quickly pick up the slack on the chain of command regardless of the situation, Alisa was rewarded with a promotion to Major, despite the loss of their commanding officer on the mission.

Approximately three weeks after the mission, Alisa took six months of personal leave from the Alliance Military, in order to deal with the loss of Captain Lalonde -- an understandable move, considering how long they had served together. Upon her return, Alisa was put in command of the SSV Romanov as their Captain, leading a team headed under Alliance Intelligence for various small missions to investigate Cerberus, a rogue factions of humans who was beginning to regain credence and power in various sectors of space.Not only did this include investigations, but also garnering a number of contacts; alien contacts, in fact. Much to her dismay, this meant dealing with turians on occasion, a fact which she was far from pleased with, but it was a necessity to their cause.Despite their digging, however, and months of quiet ops missions and investigations, Alisa's team in Intelligence came up empty-handed. With their Alliance funding running low, the remainder was turned to allowing the Romanov to help boost security around batarian slaver attacks in the Traverse, and the Cerberus investigation was considered officially disbanded. Of course, that didn't mean the Romanov had missed most of the Alliance action; this included Sovereign's attack on the Citadel, where the Alliance fleets came in more than just handy for the fight. Alisa herself was given the task of commanding a squadron to directly attack Sovereign, managing to keep their losses to a minimum in the process. It was the same talent and knowledge she'd shown during the Blitz, and she became rather revered as a leader for it.

After the battle of the Citadel, Alisa's prowess and skill during the airstrike granted her an invitation to the prestigious Interplanetary Combatives Training facility in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This included a number of harsh training regiments, including 20-hour or more training sessions with very little sleep or food. Despite the harsh conditions, Alisa's determination and pure stubbornness drove her to success, eventually awarding her an N1 designation. From there, she was invited to various subsequent training programs, including training in zero-G combat, parachuting, combat diving, jetpack flight, and other various training regimes. For three years, Alisa continually progressed through the courses, and while she wasn't always successful -- in fact, she failed her N3 course once and subsequently failed the N4 and N5 courses twice each -- eventually, she was awarded with an N6 vocation, and invited to the final of the courses, at the end of which if she was skilled enough she would receive her N7 vocation.

n7 certification & cerberus

The N7 vocation, however, was not nearly as smooth as what she'd expected. In fact, the training was far beyond the extremes presented in the previous courses, though that should have been an expectation. Given a small team of three others taking the prestigious N6 course, Alisa was sent to investigate Cerberus presence in a remote corner of the galaxy, something which was entirely up Alisa's alley. Having dealt with Cerberus before dedicating herself to ICT training, Alisa's background knowledge served some use in her squad, along with her biotic talents and leadership capabilities. They were sent to investigate into an underground research facility formerly belonging to the Alliance that had been supposedly taken over by Cerberus for other purposes, looking for one person in particular – someone who had been undercover for the Alliance working for Cerberus.Whether the facility had been abandoned or not, however, was the first question. They had to be careful to keep their radio chatter to a minimum, entering the facility from a back entrance on foot. Luckily, they were easily obscured by the snowstorm blowing outside, though it made navigation rather difficult; the only thing that kept them from going off-course was some direction from the Romanov still in orbit, as well as digital compasses that could indicate exactly which direction they were going in. The hardest part, however, was getting inside the facility; the outside doors were, after all, completely locked.For Alisa, however, entering via other methods wasn't a problem. Her team was quite lucky; their squad leader was small enough that she could fit through a ventilation shaft – something most Alliance soldiers couldn't exactly boast about, especially while wearing full Alliance armour – which allowed her to sneak in from the outside. Entering through the shaft, however, meant leaving her guns behind, as there was just barely enough room for her to enter. Crawling through ductwork was never fun, even if it was significantly warmer inside the ducts than it was outside. Knocking out a grate into the security room, Alisa was quick to manouever quickly around, silencing every Cerberus guard she ran into. Of course, with no weapons, that made things slightly difficult; however, knowledge of pressure points and various holds, coupled with one hell of a painful biotic kick or punch, helped her quickly and quietly take them out, primarily without any gunfire.Having entered the security room first, Alisa set quickly to work opening the door for her waiting comrades, finally feeling one hundred percent with her heavy pistol and submachine gun back in their usual place. She then went to modifying the cameras, rerouting them so that they would play previous footage from earlier to show no signs of change or distress from the soldiers. Disabling comms would have set off too many security arms, which left her to take her chances with those, hoping that at least disabling any camera, motion detectors, or thermal detectors would be enough of a security breach.Now, of course, they would be able to silently move their way through the research facility. Their orders were simple: kill any guards, and take into custody any of the Cerberus scientists. Alisa knew, however, that taking the scientists alive would be a challenge; most Cerberus personnel that she'd encountered in previous investigations had chosen suicide rather than capture. That meant disabling them would be a priority, leaving them unconscious or restrained in some manner which they could not commit bodily harm. She'd done it once before, after all, before Intelligence's funding for Cerberus investigations had run out. It was a lot cleaner, after all, than having to deal with the collateral damage, especially if they were too injured to return to the fight... But still alive nonetheless. They were human, after all.From the security room, Alisa and her two comrades moved quietly through the facility, taking the most direct route they could to the research labs. Once they were in and had managed to upload the information to Alliance Intelligence, they were commissioned to destroy the hardware in the labs in any way possible. That method was, of course, given by the facility's self-destruct sequence, which was the entire reason they had been required to extract the Alliance's Cerberus mole; they didn't want their mole dying with the information they had, after all.Upon reaching the central labs, however, things became quite interesting, primarily due to the sheer number of Cerberus forces Alisa and her team found themselves against. Although each of them had been issued top-end weapons and gear, there was only so much the best gear could do against Cerberus forces. By that indication, Cerberus was a lot better outfitted than what the Alliance could have expected; where their supplies came from, however, was a damned good question. Or their funding, for that matter. Relentlessly it seemed that they continued to back the Alliance N6 team into a corner, and although their training and skills kept them from being overwhelmed, they knew they would be leaving a lot of dead bodies behind.Human dead bodies, for that matter. It was a difficult pill for them to swallow.Just when they were cornered by three Atlases in an attempt to escape with the data and set the self-destruct sequence, however, help came on the way in a manner that for Cerberus was certainly unexpected. Suddenly, power was cut to the entire research lab area, allowing Alisa and her comrades enough time to escape before Cerberus could recover. Making their way to the central control room, they encountered the Alliance's Cerberus mole: though a name had not been given, they'd been given a face to look for, and Alisa soon found out that they'd been the one responsible for the power cut. Quickly they went to work setting the lab's self-destruct sequence, heading directly for the door where they had entered, only to find it blocked off and barricaded by Cerberus troops.With no other options given to them, Alisa was surprised to find her two comrades come to a decision: they would oversee the facility's destruction and buy Alisa time to get their mole out. Although the captain protested the idea, she knew it was the best choice for the mission. After all, the majority of the Cerberus troops were centered upon their only exit: small amounts of troops would be nothing for a biotic such as she. Despite wanting to help oversee the facility's destruction, Alisa had no other choice; despising the idea, she escaped from the roof with their mole, flying away aboard the Romanov as the facility exploded, leaving the two Alliance soldiers likely dead in the blast. Even in the wake of the deaths of the two soldiers, the mission was accomplished, though not in the way the captain would have hoped. Because of the level of success and the sacrifice made by her comrades, Alisa was granted N7 standing, along with the two comrades who bravely fought for the success of the operation alongside other commendations they received. From there, Alisa underwent further biotic retrofitting, upgrading from an L3 implant to an L5x, a process that with further medical advances had been made far less dangerous than her first retrofitted implant. She was fully cleared for duty only minutes before the Reapers struck Earth.

During the final fight for Earth, Alisa was part of Hammer's ground forces, helping to build and defend the Forward Operations Base while the remainder of Hammer made a final push for the beam. At first, Miranda appears to be a cold, calculating, and arrogant individual; however, Miranda's apparent 'arrogance' is born strictly of factual knowledge, and not overconfidence in her abilities. Being genetically engineered to be the perfect legacy, Miranda is well-versed in what she is or isn't capable of; as a result of this, though, Miranda struggles with seeing her own accomplishments in life. She sees a lot of her capabilities as “gifts” from her father, claiming that the only thing she owns are her “failures”. Miranda is incredibly hard on herself as a result, pushing herself to be absolutely perfect and focused and rarely taking time for herself, feeling as if she is living in the shadow of her father's legacy.Over time, Miranda learns that what she truly owns is not her capabilities, but her decisions; as a result, anything that she chooses to do utilizing the gifts she’s been given is what she truly owns, whether she succeeds or fails; after all, she could not succeed at anything if she did not try. This gives her a better sense of autonomy over her life despite her father.

Miranda is the genetically-engineered daughter of Henry Lawson. For those unaware of the Mass Effect series, this is canonical material. Miranda was genetically engineered to be the perfect human; she is traditionally very attractive, physically more durable than the average human, and has an extended lifespan. She is incredibly intelligent and multi-talented, as well as highly educated.She is not the first child of Henry Lawson; she’s simply “the first one he kept.” Miranda does not know what happened to any of her older siblings that were “imperfect” by her father’s standards, but she has, in the past, been tempted to search for them.After escaping from her father's clutches with her baby sister Oriana, Miranda went to Cerberus for assistance, eventually working her way up to becoming the Illusive Man's top operative. Her intelligence made her the perfect one to be in charge of the Lazaruz Project in 2185, a massive undertaking with only one goal: to bring Commander Shepard back from the dead.

Miranda was born on Earth in the city of Sydney, Australia, where she lived with her father Henry Lawson. From an early age, Miranda was made aware of her creation: she did not have a mother, and was instead synthesized from her father's modified chromosomes.Henry Lawson didn't want a family; Henry Lawson wanted a legacy.Miranda wasn't the first child that he'd 'created' in this manner, but she was the first child that he kept. She was to be his legacy, in every way possible, crafted to be perfect right down to her genetics. As a result of that, Miranda was given everything she could have asked for; she was educated by private tutors, taught to hone her biotic and technical skills, learning everything from playing the violin to biotics and combat.

02. DEFECTION TO CERBERUS

Despite being her father's golden child, Miranda still was not the level of perfection that he desired; when she was nearing eighteen, he had created another child, Oriana, who was likely to be Miranda's replacement. Old enough now to understand just how twisted her father's desire for a legacy was, Miranda made a radical decision: she kidnapped Oriana, who was only a baby, and disappeared with whatever money and resources she had at her disposal.For months, Miranda remained in hiding with Oriana as she tried to decide what to do. Initially, she thought she'd raise Oriana on her own, as if the baby was her own daughter; unfortunately, the fact that her father was trying to find her didn't bode well for a good life. With the help of her best friend Niket, Miranda worked to have Oriana adopted out to a good family in order to give her sister the life she deserved, rather than the high-pressure life Miranda had lived under Henry Lawson.After Oriana was adopted out, Miranda was approached by a member of Cerberus who was one of her father's old contacts. Having heard of Henry Lawson's attempts to bring Miranda back into the fold, Cerberus offered Miranda a choice: in exchange for protection from Henry Lawson, she would work for them. She accepted, knowing that this was a way in which her talents could be put to use, and that she could find meaning in the way she was created.

03. THE LAZARUS PROJECT

After years of working for Cerberus, Miranda was given the lead on one of Cerberus' most ambitious projects to date: the Lazarus Project. In 2183, news of Commander Shepard's death broke, and with the assistance of Liara T'Soni, Cerberus came into possession of Shepard's remains. The Project had one goal: to bring Commander Shepard, the Savior of the Citadel, back to life. It was more than just ambitious; it was unprecedented. Impossible, some would say... just like the achievements of the Commander.And when it came to the Lazarus Project... Miranda was successful. Bringing the Commander back wasn't just for show, however: with human colonies in the Terminus Systems disappearing completely and the Alliance and Council dragging their heels on it, Cerberus had to do something. The Lazarus Cell running the project thus became something else. With another of Cerberus' projects being an attempt at reconstructing the original SSV Normandy SR-1, the Lazarus Cell, coordinated by Miranda, embarked on a mission to stop the Collectors.During that time, it came to Miranda's attention through various channels that her sister, Oriana, was in danger. Her father's associates had finally managed to track the girl down---Oriana now being a teenager---and Miranda needed to ensure that the transfer of her sister's location went over smoothly. During this time, it came to Miranda's attention that her old friend Niket was involved, and that he had betrayed her sister's location to their father. With Shepard's help in the investigation, Miranda was able to stop Niket's betrayal and ensure that Oriana's location was safely kept away from her father in order to allow her sister to live a life free of his influence.From there, Miranda went through the Omega-4 Relay with Shepard, and they were able to stop the Collectors. At the end however, with the Illusive Man's aggresive tactics and Shepard's influence, Miranda realized that Cerberus was going too far in a direction she wasn't willing to follow, and she defected from the organization, now finding herself rogue and on the run from half the galaxy.

04. THE REAPER WAR

Now on the run from the Alliance, the Council, her father's associates, and Cerberus, Miranda was forced to go into hiding after Shepard's arrest, laying low and building what resources she could as well as reaching out to what contacts she could.As Earth was attacked, Miranda managed to escape, and in the process the news of her sister's disappearance came to her attention. She hadn't the faintest clue where Oriana had gone, and reached out to Shepard for help in the process. Eventually, she managed to track Oriana to Sanctuary, located on the planet Horizon, and faced off with Kai Leng.In the process, Miranda finally got revenge on Henry Lawson, killing him with her biotics and saving her sister.

There are a couple of things to note with Chris' portrayal in regards to shipping:⭢ Chris' polyamorous relationship with Ty and Kira will not be actively written, but will be mentioned. I have a personal discomfort with actively writing polyamorous dynamics due to a personal experience with a polyamorous individual; however, I do not wish to retcon the existence of this dynamic as it is still important and integral to Chris' character. Please understand I will not actively write the dynamic with any muns who write Kira, Ty, or both. In general, I'm open to writing Erin in a variety of modern fandoms/with a variety of modern muses, as long as I can entirely or at least mostly preserve her backstory.Please note that as a muse, Erin's backstory has elements of drug use, child abuse, mentions of pedophilia (in relation to her half-brother's abuse at the hands of a pedophilia ring), as well as mentions of other dark themes in relation to Erin's job (including but not limited to kidnapping, rape, murder, domestic violence, gun violence, and terrorism. These themes will be tagged, but not written or described in explicit detail.I have a few AUs that follow some canon divergences, namely retconning Erin's leaving the Intelligence unit (as it was due to Sophia Bush's exit from the show), but I am also open to writing her canonically as well.As well, since it is never clearly determined where Erin's surname Lindsay came from, I have opted to make it that her full (birth) name is Erin Lindsay Fletcher, but upon cutting ties with her mother as a teenager and being taken in by Hank and Camille, she began going by Erin Lindsay when enrolled at St. Ignatius Academy. After Camille's death from ovarian cancer, she officially changes her full name to Erin Camille Lindsay, in order to honour the woman she saw as a mother, and who graciously accepted her into the Voight household despite her history.

As we know that Erin was canonically in a relationship with Kelly Severide at one point as well as Jay Halstead, I will be keeping these relationships canonical. I am also open to writing shippy dynamics with others who write these characters as part of the canonical storyline; however, I will clearly state anything officially considered a ship will require chemistry. I do ship both options and am more than happy to discuss & work toward that (even if we just initially stick to canon), and I do not consider that auto-shipping as it does exist canonically in the series.Specifically for Erin's Mass Effect verse, she is also attracted to turians and drell, though she is still primarily attracted to humans.

early life

Erin is the daughter of Barbara "Bunny" Fletcher. She never knew her father, but she lived with her mother and step-father, as well as her half-brother Teddy growing up. Her mother was a drug addict, and her father was abusive; Erin rarely talks about the abuse, having put it behind her when she cut ties with her mother. Her step-father eventually disappeared from her life, along with Teddy, whom she'd grown incredibly close to as they grew older.As a teenager, Erin spent most of her time looking after her mother, who was often high on drugs and unable to take care of her. This led Erin to a life of illegal activity, hanging with shady groups of friends. She frequently started fights at school, her spitfire attitude getting her in loads of trouble, and she was expelled from a few high schools as a result. At the age of fifteen, she was involved in some illegal street activity and was arrested by Detective Hank Voight; rather than keep her detained and have her spent the rest of her teenage life in a juvenile detention center, Hank offered her the option to work as his C.I. in order to stay out of jail.

After one particular case that affected Erin deeply, Hank took pity on her and offered to take her in, something his wife Camille agreed with. Having never experienced such unconditional love and care in her life, Erin was difficult at first, though she bonded with Hank's son Justin, who was the same age as her. At sixteen, Hank used a few connections to have her enrolled at St. Ignatius School for a new start, but a single deal was made with the St. Ignatius staff: if Erin was in one fight, she would be expelled. At first Erin was able to reinvent herself and her life, living a fantasy that she was able to create; however, the girls she knew eventually found her past and bullied her relentlessly for it. Despite the toll it took on her, Erin opted to tolerate the bullying to avoid disappointing Hank. After graduating school, Erin joined the Chicago Police Department in Hank's footsteps, having been inspired by him and his kindness. She worked hard and eventually earned the rank of Detective.

Erin is assigned to the Intelligence unit, and during that year attended her high school reunion after bumping into one of her old classmates, who was surprised to hear that she was a police detective. She asked Halstead to accompany her to the reunion, but eventually leaves midway through when she realizes she shouldn't have to people-please her old classmates and their horrible behaviour.After a raid on a brothel, Lindsay meets a teenage prostitute and heroin addict Nadia Decotis and feels compassion for her, almost seeing herself in Nadia. She later convinces Nadia--who was undergoing heroin withdrawls and staying at her apartment--to provide her information on a group of counterfitters. After the investigation concluded, Erin offered Nadia the option to go back to her life as an addict or to attend rehab, and she is unsuccessful in the process. Later, Nadia reaches back out to her and Erin walks her into the detox center; Nadia eventually moves in with her, and becomes the administrative assistant for the Intelligence Unit, and Erin's work motivates Nadia to become a Chicago Police Officer.

Erin's mother Bunny reaches out to her, and despite her not wanting to be there, Bunny claims she believes that someone used her new husband's truck renting company to murder someone. Erin takes this information to Hank, who has reservations on Bunny's intel but decides to look into it; the lead is credible, and they are able to apprehend the suspects. Regardless, it comes out that Bunny was aware of some of the robberies, and only wanted the reward to settle a debt to a pimp that she owed. Hank eventually pays the debt Bunny owes.Later in the year, Nadia Decotis was kidnapped by Dr. Gregory Yates while on an errand to pick up a birthday cake for Erin's birthday (despite Erin's hate of her own birthday). Yates drives Nadia to New York, where she is tortured, raped, and killed, and eventually found by the NYPD Special Victims Unit (SVU). Erin takes Nadia's death extremely hard, and takes responsibility for her death despite it not being her fault. The guilt causes her to start unravelling, driving her to hook up with an old friend, drink in excess, and doing various drugs, which causes her to be late to work. At her mother's discretion, she resigns from the Intelligence unit in order to get some space.

Erin's life continues to spiral downward; Hank at this point has given up on her, and her mother Bunny is taking advantage of the situation. Though she meets up with Jay at some point, they part ways angrily. When Jay is kidnapped, Olinsky calls her, and she offers to help for Jay's sake, which Hank begrudgingly allows. Erin expresses her desire to return to work, and Hank agrees on two conditions: she has to live with him and do weekly drug tests, and she has to cut all ties with her mother. Erin agrees, and despite Bunny's attempts to contact her, Erin ignores her calls. Bunny eventually meets up with her, and Erin makes it clear that it's her decision, not Hank's; Bunny then files a complaint that gets a drug lord out of prison and puts Hank under scrutiny.Erin is later held hostage on a case when visiting a supposed 'victim' of a robbery, before it is realized that the "victim" is actually part of the robbery crew. Just as the crew is about to rape Erin, Jay arrives and shoots him. Erin later loses her temper when confronting the woman, who responds by spitting in her face; Erin retaliates by breaking her nose with a well-deserved punch to the face.Later that year, Justin--Hank's daughter and Erin's adopted brother--is killed, and Erin does her best to support Hank in the process. As the investigation continues, Erin tracks Hank down, finding him with Justin's killer; she tries to talk Hank out of killing the man, but her internal conflict drives her to remove herself from the situation, as she too wanted justice for Justin's death.

Still reeling from the effects of Nadia's death years later, Erin committed brutality on a suspect in an attempt to get the location of a boy he'd kidnapped. Though their new team member Hailey Upton tried to stop her, Erin ignored Hailey and continued to do it until the suspect confessed; unfortunately, Chief Lugo witnessed the brutality Erin displayed and forced her to stay behind with Upton. This got Erin involved in a case with Internal Affairs, during which she was stripped of her police powers and remanded to desk work until the conclusion of the trial. Hank, understanding her position, reached out to an old acquaintance in New York, who reached out to recruit Erin for a narcotics position in the FBI based out of New York. Erin begrudgingly accepts the offer and leaves, skipping her own going away party at Molly's to make it easier on herself to make a clean break from her life in Chicago.

Tenten is the third member of Team Gai, and is an expert in weaponry with unrivalled accuracy and capabilty. Tenten's talent is the ability to wield any weapon she picks up; she has an innate knowledge of weaponry and its intricacies, making her unmatched in her ability to carry an arsenal. She is also an expert in fuuinjutsu (sealing ninjutsu), allowing her to carry an arsenal of weapons via sealed scrolls.As well, I’m aware there’s a popular fan theory that Tenten is Metal Lee’s mother. I do not accept this fan theory as canon for my portrayal. At most, she is Metal’s aunt as Lee is her close friend and confidant, but there are not in a relationship. I do not ship LeeTen at all as a ship, so this will never be canon to my portrayal.

One of the primary statements that is key to my portrayal of Tenten is Tenten's handling of Neji's death & the repercussions of that. Neji was more than just a friend to Tenten; in the event that his death is kept canonical, it will be written that Tenten did have feelings for him, and that the reason she is still single in Boruto-era times. She has struggled to come to terms with & move on from those feelings, and while she eventually will, that is the case. In the case where there is an AU where Neji lives, I'm willing to tweak/alter this with discussion, but it can be assumed (if the other mun desires so) that Tenten has feelings for Neji. I am okay with this assumption being made.Secondly, much of the backstory I have written for Tenten is headcanon-based. As we did not get much if any canonical backstory for Tenten, I have opted to customise her backstory on my own terms. Because Tenten never mentions her own parents or anything of the sort (and she, unlike others, did not judge Naruto for being an orphan specifically) I have headcanoned that Tenten herself is an orphan, and that both of her parents were killed when the Kyuubi rampaged in the village. As a result, Tenten spent her early years in an orphanage until she was adopted by a gruff older man named Hagane Mitsashi. This is where Tenten's surname comes from.Lastly, Tenten's history will include the filler episodes from the anime, as that is where the majority of her appearances have happened, so much of it is integral to her character.

The first thing to note in terms of Tenten's shipping is I do not ship LeeTen in any capacity. She is not Metal Lee's mother, and that has been stated canonically. Lee is like a brother to her, so their relationship will remain platonic in nature and nothing else.Otherwise, in terms of ships, while NejiTen is and always will be my OTP, I'm also open to another number of possibilities, including Naruto, Gaara, and Sasuke. I have possible ideas that can be worked with in terms of these ships & I'm more than happy to discuss any ideas you may have for them as well!Otherwise, I will not ship Tenten with any of the mentor/adult characters such as Gai, Kakashi, Tsunade, etc. I personally am not comfortable with the age gap in these ships and do not wish to write them, and I ask that to be respected.

BASIC PERSONALITY

Generally kind and compassionate, Rayla is a loyal friend and ally. She has a good sense of humour, though she can be skeptical or even judgmental about people she does not fully know. She is willing to do everything she can to protect those in need, even if it means she's the one in harm's way or has to leave those she cares about behind. She lacks the drive to kill others, despite being trained as an assassin; however, she does have the dedication of an assassin through her prideful stubbornness and willingness to die making up for her parents' mistakes.Rayla lacks the hardness to be an effective assassin, as she is incapable of separating her feelings from her duty, particularly if the person she's told to kill poses no threat. She has a strong sense of justice despite the tension between humans and elves.Quick-witted, Rayla has a very sarcastic sense of humour and will rapidly make witty or snarky remarks, much to the chagrin of others. As an elf, she does have a sense of arrogance and will at times make tactless comparisons between elves and humans, though she learned to reconcile those comparisons. She has a bit of a prankster side, though her jokes are generally harmless (such as convincing Callum to smell a fart flower).Rayla is incredibly sensitive to judgements made against her based on the fact that she is an elf. In particular, she's sensitive to discrimination from humans, and often takes it personally. This is because Rayla herself is a good person; despite being trained as an assassin, she is incredibly gentle, kind, and thoughtful, and she was more than willing to lose her hand to the oath binding rather than take Ezran's life when she realized the kind of person he was. She is also sensitive to statements made of her character that are baseless and untrue, and takes rejection very hard in the process (such as when she was banished from her home). Though she puts on a tough facade, those feelings do eventually get to her, resulting in her finding ways to make herself unapproachable so others will not see how vulnerable she is.Rayla also suffers from a form of post-Traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This is from her experience at the Storm Spire, as she experiences recurring nightmares of her loved ones being captured and frozen by Viren. She is haunted by the memories of him, and tortured by the idea that he might still be alive and that he might still be a threat. This leads to her being distant at times, even toward those she's close to.

CANON DIVERGENCE

One key aspect I would like to touch on and work on diverging is Rayla's return after the two-year timeskip and her relationship with Callum.Firstly, while Rayla did leave on Callum's birthday, she also left him a gift with her letter. Though she did not tell him of its true nature, Rayla left him the brooch that she carried on her belt; unbeknowns to Callum, it was a small (and relatively weak in nature) Moon Primal Stone that she hoped he would use to find a connection to the Moon Primal Source the same way he had the Sky.Lastly, during the timeskip, Rayla learned to enchant a Moonstone Necklace (similar to the one Ava, Ellis' wolf companion, wore to appear with four legs instead of three) that allows her to don a human disguise when worn. She's unreasonably proud of it, as it means she has 'perfected' her impression as "Human Rayla", circumventing the primary issues that come with her "human" disguise (such as having one less finger, pointed ears, and horns). She appears with white-blonde hair and grey eyes when in this disguise. (Regrettably, Lujanne helped her with it. She'll never admit she asked the kooky lady for help, though.)

Firstly, my primary ship for Rayla is Callum. Unless otherwise specified or discussed beforehand, I may reference Callum as being Rayla's primary interest, so if you're open to the idea of shipping, even if it's just with chemistry, please communicate that. This is because Rayla's connection to Callum is integral to her character development.Secondly, in regards to shipping with Callum writers: I am open to the idea of shipping, but I do require chemistry to be developed. Primarily, I'm most interested in exploring the tension after the timeskip where things are a bit awkward after Rayla's return, where development on their relationship can be done. As their relationship is canonical, I'm more than happy to work with writing them as partly pre-established based on canon events and some discussion.

PRE-CANON

Rayla is the daughter of Tiadrin and Lain, two Moonshadow Elves who were members of the Dragonguard, the elite force of elven warriors chosen to protect the Dragon Prince's egg. Because of her parents' roles in Xadian society, Rayla was primarily raised by Runaan and Ethari, two close friends of her parents, whom Rayla refers to her as her uncles. When she was little, she often played in the meadow outside of the village, Silvergrove, and made friends with the Adoraburrs there.As she grew older, Runaan began to mentor Rayla in the profession of being a Moonshadow Assassin, as Runaan was one himself. Runaan believed that Rayla had great potential and skill; Ethari, on the other hand, did not wholly approve of Rayla's training, as he saw just how kind-hearted she was, too kind-hearted to be an effective assassin.
Rayla's parents were defeated during the attack on Xadia trying to protect the Dragon King Avizandum. Taken down by Viren, Tiadrin and Lain were trapped inside Viren's magical coins, and were not actually killed. Despite their valor, Rayla---along with the rest of Xadia---was led to believe that the egg was destroyed and that her parents had abandoned their duty as members of the Dragonguard, and she developed a hatred for them.Following this, Rayla accompanied Runaan and four other assassins to Katolis, where they were tasked to slay King Harrow and Prince Ezran in order to avenge Avizandum and the unhatched Dragon Prince.

BOOK ONE: MOON

As part of the task to kill King Harrow and Prince Ezran, Rayla was a failure point of their mission; she refused to kill one of the guards they encountered, and upon Runaan finding out, she was left behind. Determined to prove herself, she climbed the castle walls on her own, intending to kill the prince or the king herself. She comes across Callum, and in the process they come across the Dragon Prince's egg; she ends up escaping the castle with Ezran and Callum, and in the process, one of her bindings falls off, indicating that Prince Harrow had been killed.As they began to travel to Xadia, Rayla's hand got worse and worse over time, as the binding continued to tighten around her wrist the longer Prince Ezran lived. Heading to the winter lodge, they are ambushed by Amaya and her guards, and Callum paints Rayla as a murderer in order to have the three of them escape without revealing their true intentions. Rayla is deeply hurt by this, berating Callum for his depiction of her.As they travelled in the direction of Xadia, they eventually end up at the top of a mountain and are caught in an avalanche; Callum tries to save them with the Apiro spell, but it isn't enough. They end up on a frozen lake, and the ice under Ezran begins to crack; in Callum's attempts to give her the egg, she explains that her hand is in agony because the binding is tied to Ezran's life, and that she won't be able to hold it. Callum tries to hand it to her, causing her to drop it, and it fell through the ice. This led Ezran to dive beneath the surface to rescue it, nearly dying in the process; they manage to save both him and the egg, but it becomes clear that the egg isn't in good shape.This leads them to head to the Cursed Caldera, which they find out is really the Moon Nexus guarded by Lujanne, a Moonshadow Elf mage. Lujanne explains that the only way to save the egg would be to hatch it, but that a Sky Dragon can only be hatched in the eye of a storm. Callum destroys the Sky Primal Source that he'd been in possession of, creating a massive storm in the area, which allows Azymondias to hatch from his egg; Ezran promptly nicknames him 'Zym'. Upon seeing Rayla's injured hand, Zym bites at the binding, tearing it from her wrist to free her hand, saving her from the spell.

BOOK TWO: SKY

Staying at the Moon Nexus for a few days after Zym hatched, they eventually plan to leave to return to their journey to Xadia. As they are at the Nexus, they encounter Claudia and Soren, who had been chasing down the princes ever since leaving the castle, on Viren's orders. Rayla wakes up when Soren attempts to ambush her in her sleep, but Callum breaks up their fight; Rayla attempts to tell Callum the truth about Harrow's death, but is interrupted. She tries to approach Callum later and tell him, but finds out that Claudia beat her to the punch. Rayla tried to apologize, but was rebuffed by him initially; Callum later approaches her and forgives her, understanding that she did not want to hurt him with the news. With Lujanne's help, they're able to expose Claudia and Soren's betrayal, and escape with Phoe-Phoe in the direction of Xadia.As Phoe ran low on energy, they realize they need another means by which to reach Xadia, and end up recruiting the help of a blind pirate, Villads, who agrees to take them across the bay immediately. Rayla is seasick the entire time, but they manage to make it to land as the storm hits, mooring until the storm passes. Back on board The Ruthless, Rayla begrudgingly battles with her seasickness again, and is happy when they reach land once more. As they rest for the night to continue their journey, Callum asks what it's like for her to be connected to the moon, as he has been trying to connect to the Sky Arcanum to do magic once more. As they hear the roar of a dragon nearby, they watch as it is shot down from the sky from a nearby village, and Rayla rushes to help, with a distinct knowledge in her heart that it was the right thing for her to do.In the process of saving the dragon, they are found by Soren and Claudia, who were responsible for bringing the dragon down; Rayla tries to fend them off, but is unsuccessful. Callum arrives, performing dark magic in order to save the dragon, but collapses in the middle of the spell; with the dragon freed, Rayla carries him off to safety, deeply worried about his condition. Corvus' arrival reveals Harrow's death to Ezran, whom Callum had yet to tell, and Ezran is upset with the both of them for hiding it from him. Seeing Callum's condition worsening, Rayla is terrified that the use of dark magic will end up killing him, and begs for him to stay with her. Callum eventually wakes up; and reveals he understands the Sky Arcanum, and is able to perform spells using it. As Ezran returns, their paths become clear: Ezran must return to Katolis in order to take over the throne, and Callum and Rayla must continue on to Xadia. Crossing the Moonstone Path into Xadia, they are met with a massive obstacle in their path: Sol Regem, the previous Dragon King, guarding the entrance to Xadia.

book three: sun

Attempting to make it past Sol Regem and barely succeeding (first with stealth, which failed, then with reason, which failed... then with distractions, which was only barely successful) they continue through Xadia, making their way to Silvergrove, where Rayla grew up. Upon arriving in Silvergrove, Rayla finds out that because she was the only survivor of the assassination in Katolis, it was assumed that Rayla betrayed them and ran away; as a result, she had been banished from the Silvergrove, a spell in which even Runaan's husband, Ethari, also participated in. Ethari sees her in the reflection of a sword and breaks the spell momentarily to speak with her, allowing her to explain the situation to Ethari, who provides them with two mounts to continue their journey and sends a message to the Dragon Queen.Grieving over her banishment, Rayla and Callum continue on, but are quickly found by a Skywing Elf, Nyx, who claimed to be a messenger of the Dragon Queen Zubeia. Rayla shut down and tried to remain emotionally isolated from even Callum, who tried to encourage her to talk about how she was feeling. As Nyx offers to help them cross the Midnight Desert, Rayla continues to remain distant as they ride on the Ambler, and once they reach the oasis, she finally let her feelings show, breaking down into tears as she sat by the pond. Realizing Callum had followed her, he tried to drive him away so he wouldn't see her in such a state, but Callum refused, instead saying positive things about her; Rayla impulsively kissed him, much to his surprise. Rayla told anyone that if he mentions it to anyone, she'd bind herself to kill him; while they were distracted, Nyx kidnapped Zym, with the intent to return him to Zubeia for her own personal gain.Unable to follow Nyx until the morning, Rayla uses the tracking skills she picked up from Corvus to track the Ambler, and they catch up to Nyx and Zym; Nyx flies away carrying Zym in a final attempt to escape, and Zym shocks her, knocking them down from the air. Rayla, with reluctance, saves Nyx from a group of Soulfang Serpents, and in return, Nyx agrees to take them across the Midnight Desert. As Callum talks about how heroic she is to Nyx, Rayla is stunned by his words, and even more stunned when he impulsively kisses her; she eagerly returns his affections, touched that he thinks so highly of her.Making their way to the Storm Spire, they come across the 'statue' of Avizandum, which Rayla reveals is not actually a statue: it becomes clear that the connections between Ezran, Zym, and Callum go deeper than thought, as King Harrow was responsible for Avizandum's death, and Avizandum was responsible for Sarai's death. As they arrive at the base of the Storm Spire, they encounter a number of ominous messages along the way, struggling to breathe as the air thins near the top. As they pass out, Zym wakes up Ezran as Pyrrah, the dragon they'd saved previously, arrives to offer them aid. Pyrrah draws the rune required in the dirt, and telepathically communicates the trigger word to Ezran, who wakes Callum up to cast the spell for all of them. With their ability to breathe in the thinned air restored, they make their way to the top of the Spire, meeting with Ibis, who informs them that the Dragon Queen, Zubeia, hasn't opened her eyes in ten days.Rayla finds being at the Spire difficult, as she believes it is the place that her parents abandoned their duty; after Callum's spell, however, she understands that her parents did not abandon their duty. Rather, her parents were the last two to stay true to their duty after the remaining Dragonguard abandoned theirs, but were defeated by Viren. Not long after, Soren arrives, informing them of Viren's plan to attack the Spire with his army. As they are discussing a plan, Amaya arrives with Janai and the remaining forces from Lux Aurea, who offer their assistance. Ezran leaves with Pyrrah to rally the dragons, and they begin their defense of the Storm Spire as Viren's forces arrive.The tide begins to turn in Viren's favour, but much to their surprise, the forces from Duren, led by Queen Aanya and rallied by Opeli, Corvus, Barius, Marcos, and Gren, have come to assist the Xadian forces in the battle. Rayla remains up in the Storm Spire protecting Zym and Zubeia, and eventually faces off against Viren alone, the same way her parents did. Frozen in ice the same way her parents were, Viren taunts her, revealing the true fate of her parents: that they were trapped in coins via one of his spells, stuck in an eternal prison they could never escape from, and that he plans to turn her into one as well to add to his 'collection' the same way he did with her parents and Runaan. With Bait's help she escapes the ice and engages Viren at the spire as he tries to capture Zym, but Viren---controlled by Aaravos---manages to disarm her with a spell. In one final attempt, Rayla tackles Viren off the edge, resolving herself to falling to her death as long as she is able to stop Viren from capturing Zym. Luckily, Callum arrives just in time to save her from falling. Not long after, Zubeia awakens and signals peace between the nations.Eventually, they all return to Katolis, but Rayla is not convinced that Viren's plans are over; as a result, she initially agrees to travel with Callum to find answers. However, her traumatized state from her fight with Viren gets the better of her, and she elects to leave without him, not wanting to put him in harm's way; unfortunately, this means abandoning him on his birthday, a day that he would least expect that she'd miss, and continues her search for Viren on her own for the next two years.

TIMESKIP: CHASING SHADOWS

Accompanied by her new Cuddlemonkey friend Stella, Rayla finds herself in the island town of Scumport that acts as a trading hub for human and elven merchants, hunters, pirates, and thieves that was established in Xadia after the battle at the Storm Spire. When she tries to ask for information about Viren from an Earthblood Elf merchant, Rayla finds that she is spurned, which draws the attention of two Tidebound Elf enforcers. As she prepared for a fight, she was saved by a female Moonshadow Elf buccaneer, who takes Rayla to her home. Introducing herself, Redfeather explains that Rayla will not find anyone willing to give up the information she seeks for free; while Rayla has nothing monetary to offer, Redfeather notes that she can offer a favour, which Rayla reluctantly offers in order to get the information she needs.To pay back her favour, Rayla is asked by Redfeather to participate in Scumport's fighting pit inside the Leviathan's Bones. She needs to win three rounds for Redfeather's prize, and in exchange Redfeather will give her the information she needs about Viren.Taking on a banther-sized Earthblood Elf followed by a Tidebound Elf, Rayla's winning streak earns her the title of 'New Moon' from the crowd; she eventually fights a human who was exiled from Katolis after the battle at the Storm Spire, whose physique reminds her of Soren and presence reminds her of Callum. Distracted by her own memories, Rayla is beaten by the human and given a token for her consolation prize. Rayla eventually uses this to bargain with Redfeather for the information she needs on Viren. Impressed, Redfeather instead offers her a different favour: to retrieve some valuable dark magic ingredients, which Rayla reluctantly agrees to do.Finding the dark mage that Redfeather had told her about, Rayla watches as the mage makes a trade with a winged Skywing Elf; the mage notices her and tries to use a spell to escape. Rayla discovers that he is a young boy from Neolandia who had purchased a Blood Coral to warm a cold hearth, draw plague from poisoned water, and heal the sick and bleeding. Rayla, hesitating to kill him, is defeated when the boy uses a Blood Coral piece to cover himself in red armour and use the riptide to escape her. Stella brings her a piece that was left behind during the skirmish, and she returns to Redfeather and confesses her failure. Redfeather isn't angry, but encourages Rayla to stay in Scumport; Rayla, remembering Callum's words, instead chooses to embrace her true self and return to Katolis to see him. Redfeather then bestows upon her a Finnegrin's Favour as a token so that she can find her way back to Scumport if needed.

BOOK FOUR: EARTH

Two years after leaving on Callum's birthday, Rayla returns to Katolis, and is rebuffed by Callum, who is not interested in talking to her despite her attempts to reconnect. Knowing his anger is her fault, Rayla keeps her distance from him despite wanting to work things out with him; she reveals that in the two years she was gone, she hasn't found any information on Viren, Claudia, or their whereabouts. Rayla secludes herself until the end of Zubeia's welcoming ceremony at the Valley of Graves, when the dying image of Ibis appears, warning them of Aaravos' return. She returns to the Storm Spire with Callum, Ezran, Pyrrah, Zubeia, Zym, and Soren.As they look through Aaravos' mirror, Callum's single brush with dark magic allows Aaravos to take over his body, much to Rayla's horror. After taunting each of them in turn, Aaravos shatters the mirror from his side, leaving Rayla worried for Callum as she remembered how he'd been after his first and only use of dark magic. Later, Rayla talks with Callum atop the Storm Spire, and Callum recalls his desperate attempt to use magic to save her when she tackled Viren off the ledge. After a discussion with Zubeia, they deduce that Viren and Claudia intend to release Aaravos, and like others in the past, are under his influence.They travel to speak with Rex Igneous at Umber Tor, only to find the main gate is blocked; as Zubeia is physically too large to enter through the back entrance, the rest of the crew end up going through the Drakewood. Finding out this is the home of the Drakeriders, Rayla offers to scout alone; when told it's a bad idea, she offers to have Callum come with her, who refuses and offers Soren as her scouting companion. Disappointed, Rayla begrudgingly accepts. Soren tries to engage her on the topic of her relationship with Callum; she refuses to engage, but Soren tells her that her leaving hurt Callum really bad, and that her return has made things weird for him, and they just need to work through it. They encounter a Drakerider elf named Warlon, who manages to capture Soren and throw him into the Pit of Despair. Separated from Soren, Rayla returns, assuming he will return by the morning.Waking the next morning, they discover Soren has still not returned; Rayla is worried, but their discussion is interrupted by the arrival of Zym; Ezran suggests they use his connection with Zym to find Soren. They arrive at the Pit of Bones and, upon finding Soren's discarded armour, they suspect he'd been eaten by one of the drakes. N'than informs them taht he may have moved deeper into the mountain, and they opt to follow him along the Path of Despair. While crossing the bridge in the pitch black, Rayla teases that she can do cartwheels, but when Callum accidentally drops one of his Moon Opals, they attract the presence of the enemies. They manage to make it through to the lava pit, and have to wait a few hours for the lava to recede before they can cross.As they are resting, Callum wakes Rayla up to have a chat; Rayla thinks this is about the state of their relationship, but is taken aback when Callum asks her to kill her if Aaravos ever takes control of him. Stunned and horrified by his request, her only impulsive response is to honk his nose, calling it 'ridiculous'; however, in reality Rayla couldn't agree to such a thing, as that would mean robbing herself of the one person she's most afraid of losing.Finally meeting with Rex Igneous, their initial gifts for him are rejected, but upon receiving Ezran's brown sludge tart, he agrees to give them an audience. Figuring out that Rex Igneous is in possession of the map to Aaravos' prison, they are interrupted by Claudia, who puts everyone under a sleep spell.Soren's arrival as a captive (and his aggresively putrid feet) are enough to wake Rayla up from her slumber; she uses the opportunity to wake Rex Igneous from his, and the mountain begins to crumble with his rampage. During their escape, Rayla sees Viren, and she and Callum share a moment briefly before she chases after Viren, Claudia, and Terry. Capturing Terry momentarily, Claudia cruelly reveals the fate of Runaan and her parents, showing their faces trapped in Viren's cursed coins. Initially, Claudia cruelly tricked her by giving her a bag of stones; however, Claudia later returns to give her the coins, and she keeps them in Stella's portal for safe keeping. They manage to make it out of Umber Tor, but require everyone else's help to get free from the rocks that buried them.

BOOK FIVE: OCEAN

Rayla spends her time at the castle in Katolis, feeling helpless as Ezran and the others are out on a mission. Callum revels he's been learning about the Ocean arcanum, though Rayla says he should be doing more research on Startouch Elves in the event they fail to stop Claudia and Viren from freeing Aaravos. Later, Rayla sneaks into Callum's office to try and find information on the curse coins her parents and Runaan are trapped in; she is later caught by Callum, and in order to continue searching the old hidden chambers Viren had for more clues, the steals the key to his office, using Stella's portal to venture into Viren's old chambers.In Viren's chambers, she finds the cell where Runaan was held captive, along with another coin containing a human; the sudden movement causes Rayla to be alarmed, until she comes across Runaan's bowblade, causing her to break down into tears. While holding it, she has a vision of her parents and Runaan sliently encouraging her to prioritize protecting the world from Aaravos over saving them. Returning to Callum's office, Rayla finds herself surrounded by Opeli and the Crownguard, and she is arrested by them and held in the throne room until Callum arrives to authorize her release. She later offers to explain to him, but he makes it clear that he trusts her implicitly, and when she feels comfortable telling him, he'll be there to listen.They head off the next morning in the direction of Lux Aurea, but Rayla barely slept the night before, once again plagued by her nightmares; she's drowsy for most of the start of the trip, despite being startled awake by the Shadowpaw she was riding. After some coffee hot brown morning potion and doughnuts? bagels? doughie-o's, they set off. As Rayla suggests they make camp in the wood for the night Callum, Bait, and Stella convince her to agree to Callum's suggestion of staying at the nearby inn that had free breakfast, a fact which she didn't regret in the slightest by the next morning.Along the way, they encountered a strange Banther, which they later learn is a corrupted Banther, on their way to the camp of the Sunfire Elves. Speaking with Queen Janai, they are told it is forbidden for them to go to the Great Bookery in Lux Aurea; Amaya, knowing Callum's stubbornness, approaches them and offers to go with. Janai also realizes their stubbornness and offers her condolences, wishing she could go with them, bu tknowing that she has a duty as Queen to look out for her people. Thus, the group travels to Lux Aurea, making it clear that they need to return from the Bookery before sundown.While there, Callum finds information on the Novablade, while Rayla has a deep conversation with Amaya regarding hers and Callum's relationship; Amaya reveals that her leaving hurt Callum deeply, and that while Amaya is regretful for judging Rayla based on her being an elf during their first meeting, she apologizes only to scold Rayla for hurting Callum the way she did. Amaya explains how she and Rayla have a similar mindset, with Amaya explaining that hers began after Sarai's death, and she realized she was incredibly lonely. She explains that true strength is found through trust and sharing burdens with loved ones; Rayla is touched and inspired by Amaya's words, and after a warm hug, she goes to talk to Callum.Speaking to Callum privately, she reveals the true fate of her parents and Runaan, showing him the cursed coins they are trapped in. Callum mentions seeing a spell that could restore bodies to separated spirits, but they learn that the spell requires a Quasar Diamond, which is in the Star Scraper alongside the Nova Blade. At that point, they realize they are too late leaving, and that there are corrupted creatures feasting on the horses they left outside. A fight for their lives ensues, and while Zubeia's appearance helps to fend them off, Amaya and Corvus are unable to escape on Zubeia, but manage to lock themselves in the book drop away from the corrupted banthers.Returning to the Storm Spire, they debate whether to head to the Starscraper to get the Nova Blade, or to find Archmage Akiyu, the Tidebound Elf who had created Aaravos prison; with Callum and Ezran debating one or the other, they turn to Rayla to be the deciding vote; she decides they should find Archmage Akiyu, and with Zubeia's help, they go to find her. Making their way through her tricks and machinations, Akiyu reveals the location of Aaravos' prison: the Sea of the Castout. She also gives them an enchanted amulet, hoping them will be able to stop Claudia and Viren. As they meet back to wait for Zubeia, the Dragon Queen does not appear as she'd been bitten by one of the corrupted Banthers at the Great Bookery. Knowing they need to make it to the Sea of the Castout, Rayla leads them to a spooky dock, giving up her single Finnegrin's Favour to the ferryman to take them to Scumport.While in Scumport, they search for a ship, and Soren leads them back to Villads, the pirate captain who had helped her and Callum two years ago in their quest to reach Xadia. Before they leave, Ezran stages a plan for them to steal something from Finnegrin, revealed to be three glowtoad babies that Finnegrin had planned to use as bait for a Leviathan. That leads Finnegrin to follow them on the Sea Legs, angry that he'd been swindled by them. They attempt to escape in a cloud of fog, but are followed until Finnegrin catches up to them and manages to sink The Ruthless, capturing all of them.While on Finnegrin's ship, they find out what he truly wants from Callum: he wants the spell that killed Avizandum so that he can take down the Archdragon of the Sea for revenge. Rayla tries to free Callum by unlocking her shackles, but Finnegrin casts a spell on her that causes her blood to start freezing in her veins, putting her in agonizing pain. Later, Finnegrin tries to feed her to a Leviathan, but not before Callum attempts to free her, ending up under the influence of the same spell in the process. This spell allows him to begin to understand the Ocean Arcanum; however, Finnegrin then turns to his bodyguard, "Deadwood", to throw them overboard. Soren tries to talk to "Deadwood", eventually convincing him that even though Finnegrin bullies him and calls him names, he doesn't have to be a terrible person. "Deadwood" then proceeds to throw Finnegrin off the ship to the Leviathan, telling the elf that "Deadwood" isn't his name: his name is Elmer.With the Sea Legs now under their control, they head to the Sea of the Castout to find Aaravos' prison. Claudia, Terry, and Viren are not far off; Callum decipers that the runes on the amulet, with the help of the Ocean Arcanum, will allow them to breathe underwater in order to reach the prison. At first, Rayla was unable to go down; she was too terrified to take a breath underwater and trust the magic, panicking at the last second and choosing to stay on the boat with Soren, Bait, and Zym. However, realizing that Callum and Ezran are likely to need their help, Rayla eventually finds the courage to dive in after them, just as they are engaged in a fight with Claudia. She manages to cut off one of Claudia's tentacles---and thus, one of her legs---while Callum steals her amulet, forcing her to resurface. With Aaravos' prison in their possession, they leave the sea floor and head back to the ship victorious.
